The Euro 2008 Football Championship Thread

Yea! Germany wins 2-0. I think tho that the Poles did keep the ball well, but no end product, a bit like Barcelona recently. Podolski! Top scorer alongisde Torres. Gomez and Klose weren't exactly doing very well, but that flick which set Klose free for him to square to Podolski for the 1st goal was pure genius. The 2nd was a bit of a fluke, horrible defending frm the Poles, then that laughable attempt by Klose but it somehow ended up just right for Podolski to volley in. Boruc is top-class tho, shown by the way he held Bastian Schweinsteiger's long-range rocket and kept Ballack out.

I bet Italy to beat Holland 2-1, and Draw-Away for the Romania - France match.

So far the matches have been really really boring, IMO. Fell asleep like after 15 minutes for both the Switzerland - Czech Republic and Austria - Croatia match. Luka Modric looks pretty good, eh? Pity he's at the wrong club.

Italy's World Cup winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will captain the Azzurri in Monday's Euro 2008 Group C opener against Holland.

The Juventus star will replace Fabio Cannavaro as skipper with the veteran defender ruled out for the whole tournament with an ankle injury.
'Yes, I will be the captain,' Buffon confirmed on Sunday.
'It will not be the first time but it still gives me great joy.'
Buffon, who has played for the national team for the past 12 years, believes his team can go all the way in the competition.
Italy were impressive in the qualifying campaign, losing just once in 12 games while finishing first in their group ahead of France.
'We are the team to beat but it's down to us to prove it,' said Buffon.
'We feel we are ready for this tournament but we are also curious to know how ready we really are and that we will see it against Holland.'
The Azzurri face a challenging group with games against Romania and France also awaiting them.
'The most important thing is get off to a good start,' said Buffon.
'We know how significant it is to start on the right foot and that has been a problem in the past.'
The Italians only managed to pick up two points in their first two games of Euro 2004 and were eventually knocked out despite winning their last group game.
Despite the absence of injured wingers Arjen Robben and Ryan Babel, Buffon should have a busy night with forward Ruud van Nistelrooy set to provide much of the threat up front for the Dutch, who have not beaten Italy in 30 years.
'We are in a very strong group,' he said.
'But we are really focusing on our first two games (Italy and France) and then we will see what happens.
'The truth is, if we progress past the group stages, we will be the big favourites for the title.'
Meanwhile, Van Nistelrooy is happy to have put his problems with coach Marco van Basten behind him.
A strained relationship led to the hitman being dropped at the World Cup in Germany but that is now in the past.
'I have found peace,' said Van Nistelrooy.
'I feel better than two years ago, where I was going through a difficult time after my departure from Manchester United. I had lost confidence in myself.
'But now everything has returned to normal.'

Italy to win by 2-1 tonight..

VIVA LA ITALIA!

Easy game for the germans. 2-nil.

croatia will beat austria and modric will score.

fgl bro, you not the only one who got it right. ahahs.

me thinks romania will stun france to a draw. 2-2.

draw for italy/holland match. probably 0-0.

Half-time update: Romania 0-0 France

Romania have been passing and keeping possesion well. Mutu has been a constant threat up front and Chivu has been marshalling the defence and midfield well enough to keep France on the backfoot. The French haven't had a really good half, they keep losing possesion, often due to sloppy passing or receivers who are half asleep, but they have created a few chances, with Nicolas Anelka coming the closest, a close-range header flying over the bar from 5 yards, after Franck Ribery's corner was poorly 'cleared'. Eric Abidal, Florent Malouda and Franck Ribery have been the main men in this half for France, but they need the other players to get more involved or else Romania will punish them. Mutu and Chivu need to continue to press forward and continue to keep the French on the backfoot. If they keep this up, they could actually win. The referee has been strict, already 3 yellow cards given in this half. 1 for a blatant handball by Daniel Niculae in the French penalty area, 1 for a challenge on Ribery by Dorin Goian ( it was a harsh decision to me ) and another for dissent ( another harsh decision IMHO ). Not a very exciting game, but enough to keep me watching for the 2nd half. Let's see what it brings.

HAHAHAHA!

italy got trashed 3-nil by netherlands! true mark of champions!

but, its still the first match.

France-Romania was booring... That goes to show that they still need a "Zidane" to do well in big tournaments.

Italy-Holland was a greeat game.. Too bad my fav team lost but overall its one of the best game yet. Van Basten surely owes Van De Sar big time for his outstanding performance. Hope Italy can get the results for the next two games.

look who's playing tonite????
oh...the champ ---> spain!! (F1, tennis...now soccer!)
:D

Dejavu huh, hope spain can win.....But the Oranje are playing great attacking football, and also have to thank Van Der Sar...He is like a wine, the older it is, the better....woohooo..

haha. yeah. van der sar was on fire.

but spain, we all know they have a tendency of underperforming in the competitions.

lets all wait and see how they do.

France vs Romania was such a pathetic game. I counted only one shot on target and that was almost straight to the keeper. The only person who could have scored was the referee! Shyte game!

Dutch vs Italy was great. The scoreline didn't do the Italians justice. But the Dutch played well. Was anyone else surprised how many left-legged players were on the Dutch team? And to think that Robben and van Persie were on the bench.

Tonight it's the Spartans vs Vikings. Get prepared for some sleepy football.

Spain vs Russia - duh. I might give this a miss too.

Actually i wasnt surprise, tats y sometime Robben and Persie have to take turn to play either left or right attacking Midfielder....with 1 striker or they all just rotate among themself, sometime i don even noe whose playing wat, versatile player, remind me of Cocu...
