the entrance to berklee (how hard is hard)

i think online really defeat the purporse you dont get to experience music the way the berklee pple are doing it.

you don need a cert to do music of course, but i guess with a certification you are open up to more options right? it really depends on you. the investment is alot , with that investment i am sure you can make your own professional studio and work with it.

it all really depends on personal perferances. :)

MOE Overseas Teaching Scholarship is awarded by the PSC if i'm not mistaken, hence you'll need very good A lvl results, by very good i mean AAAA and 2 S paper distinctions and also preferably a very good CCA record. I'm not saying you can't get them or don't have them, but its a very very prestigious scholarship and also very hard to get as well. Also, when such scholars return from their overseas study, they'll be deployed to work in MOE itself, not teaching in schools.

Of course, i could be entirely mistaken. But i'm looking for a career in teaching as well, though my field is mathematics, and i've done a bit of reading up on the scholarships too, so my guess should be close enough.
 
add in production record lables...the whole deal...is there a future being in music??if so where can one look? :lol:
 
woah.. audio and music, surely theres alot of jobs out there man.. teacher,producer,sound engineer(got many specifics ,e.g live, studio, mastering etc) , arranger,composer,performer, mix n match and u can have almost alot of combos..
 
u can be an engineer in a studio, or u can own ur own studio and do ur own productions for media stuffs. u can be a proffesional pianist , proffesional singer etc. dude.. there are so many jobs out there, see wad u wanna do.. but normally in sg, u have to be the bao ka liao kind of guy to survive

yea. im planning to go to berkelee after NS. enlisting in march. i want to get a degree in Music Production and Engineering and hoping to get the MDA overseas scholarship. Any suggestions on what i can do now to gain as much experience as possible?

I've been doing a few live gigs for bands like Ronin, 80% alcohol when they came to my JC to perform. and also once in a while I would do a few music arrangements...mostly contemp pop. Very interested to go to berkelee but alot of my friends tell me to give it up cos its impossible.

many people also say the music scene in singapore is too small. but i strongly believe that it is growing and that a degree from berkelee is going to put me in a good position to build up the music scene in singapore. yup. if you guys out there in the industry can give me some advice it would be good. and perhaps also give me some studio experience other than the few recordings i've done for my JC peers under the MEP programme and stuff.

i also wanna go berklee, and i tell you, its NOT IMPOSSIBLE. wad others said are B.S , berklee is not impossible to go, but its a lil tough. currently it is A MUST to take auditions to get in, they changed the rule in 2006. So it gets a lil tougher (last time ppl could buy their way in :lol: ).

Advice : Mastering your instrument is very important because berklee is one place where they will drill you on ur performance no matter what course you are taking, what instrument do you play? :) If you wanna save money and save time there, it's best you learn from a qualified teacher to teach you stuffs like Harmony, arranging etc. When ure at berklee, u will do tests and get advance placing so you can skip these "basics" that you will learn for the first two years.

Learning about audio engineering now will definietely give you the edge over others while attending your course, but i don't think it would help much in letting you enter berklee itself. Concentrate on your instrument and music theory, compose a few great tracks and you can let them consider them as part of the admission or scholarship.

If you wanna gain more exposure to audio n recording stuffs, i suggest you also set up your own home studio and play around with those. In addition, you can look around for any studios that are willing to take you in as apprentice :)

seldom studios will take in "internship" (maybe focal pro i don't know.) but how I started out learning recording was going along my friend's band's recording session at Insound studio about 6 years ago so.. watch and learn.. after then took me 2 years of hands-on bedroom recording to get confident. life is a little harder to start out when you can't afford courses and no one wants to teach hehe. so information is more available nowadays esp on soft / internet.

20¢ worth.

hi. thanks for ur replies. i took music at A'Levels and waiting for results now. Coming out soon. Through preparing for Music at Alevels I do already have some prior knowledge in arranging and harmony. I have a G8 abrsm theory backgrnd and a DipABRSM cert in piano perf. needless to say my piano is my main instru. Composed a few works for my alevels portfolio submission and setup a budget studio in my jc from scratch. done quite a few recordings for my classmate's compositions in the studio and also friend's band's single. ie. Eternal Loop - Superhuman Me. Have experience in orchestral/multitrack band/solo recording but now jus finding a studio that will accept me as apprentice and finding live gigs to do. yea. and also to pass time till i go to bmt.
