The Biggest Rock Band?

Don't we all get tired of hearing who is the biggest rock band in the world? This title went from U2 to Aerosmith to GnR to Metallica to a whole bunch of monkeys who can't even play decent guitar solos. Anyone knows how this WWE title is being determined? Most radio airplay? Most albums sold? Most sold-out concerts? Most controversy?

My point is that 20 million people could have bought the album but definitely not 20 million of them will think the album is kickass. Radio airplay tends to be determined by what the radio thinks is suitable. Remember back in 1991 when Enter Sandman became Metallica's most famous hit where random joes suddenly think they know the band a lot and just went 'I'm a big Metallica fan'. Concert-goers don't necessarily mean they are fans of a band. I'm sure a whole bunch who went to the last Megadeth and Black Sabbath concerts don't know all the stuff.

So what's your opinion? And importantly, who do you think is your biggest band in the World?

hmm wow that's a mouthful.

i totally feel the same way as you man.
these people follow what they see on Mtv and their local radio station.

in my opinion, Mtv doesn't showcase the best bands. and best doesn't necessarily mean famous. sure like you said, i don't know how they even DECIDE who's the best band. likewise, the title for most airplays may belong to another band but the title for most album sold doesnt have to be the same band. there's no way that a band can win all the titles at once. there must be something that they cant achieve. nothing's perfect.

ok back to these poseurs. yea seriously the guys may learn the lyrics of a band's songs the day before they went to their gig. what's worse, they'll wear band tees thinking that they're telling everyone," hey i know this band! i know their lyrics! that makes me their biggest fan!"
shut up man. you're just like the majority.
there are other people who worships the band more than you do. so don't act like you own the band or something.

i don't listen to mainstream but i somehow know what bands are famous at the time being because everywhere i go, there'll be someone singing a song they heard from the radio. as long as there are such things as Mtv and radio, there'll be famous bands. as long as there are famous bands, there'll be followers, or should i say, 'number one fans'. and as long as they exist, there will always be poseurs. get my drift?

personally, i don't have a best band in mind. i listen to unknown underground bands that people hardly ever heard of. i don't wanna put the band name here as it might result in them becoming more well-known and more idiots will follow in their footsteps. these poseurs would then think i'm just, like, them. liking the band when they're big. that's not me anymore. i've left that mainstream madness long ago.

but to bands out there, i don't restrict you from being famous. it's your decision, your effort.

and thanks for reading my long, long reply.

i'll admit i am one of those retards that follow others.e.g bands like GnR,you name it.but that was a long time ago.now realising the beauty of underground music.my friends think im a freak.

we all can tell that bands that are aired on radio got tonnes of poseur fans.i dont want to point out a band but especially AVENGED SEVENFOLD.opps...

as long as the existence of MTV and other major music channels are regconised there will always be a wave of girls chasing them.in my case the biggest band for me counts through the talent and music material be it mainstream or underground.but usually its underground.

so please no purist attitude in this thread.they usually spark trouble.

lol sorry i'm just answering his question. eveyone has opinions. there will never be a correct opinion cos everyone's different

but i see you're like me too. cheers to supporting the underground

I don't think there's anything wrong with a mainstream band. We can almost consider U2 to be mainstream now even though they somehow started with very politically driven music. They're a great band and I do like them but is that the biggest band in the World? I don't know. Surely their hardcore fans would think that way. We all have a favourite band and to us they're our biggest rock band. But I would think that if someone wants to print that out in the media, there should at least be an objective criteria to say that. So far, I don't think anyone has done it convincingly.

I'm sure in their days, when Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Judas Priest first started out, they did not think they will be on Billboard charts and be conveniently categorised as Mainstream or radio-friendly.

And so the argument lives on...

Dime, purist attitude exists in all of us...it's whether if they're exhibited to the public. It's still an opinion and nonetheless should be respected. I don't think there's anything wrong with MTV. Can we say that Megadeth or Testament are now crap bands cos they released a few music videos? No we can't. The bands could be giving the fans what they want. A visual perspective of a song. MTV can make some bands famous but I'm sure they can't make a band out to be the biggest band in the world. If they could, Good Charlotte would be selling more albums than China can print money.

Mtv has proven to make regular bands to multi-millionaire.like my previous post i stated A7x.anyways good music is good music regardless of what it is,who is it from.let the poseurs be and enjoy the music be it paramore who was once unknown to man or the likes of the devil wears prada.

I agree with you and it's all the work of evil record companies...they manufacture a band, push it to MTV, MTV shoves it down throats of the youth. Simple formula. It works.

But I don't think anyone has offered their opinion of how the biggest rock band should be determined.

the biggest band for me would be the likes of metallica.i admit i do not know every song they ever produced.but their abilities and stage presence does it for me.that is what a biggest band does imo.if literally big band maybe slipknot.cause got 9 members so it makes them big in numbers.lol.

Hard to say who is the biggest band la.

But you know something amazing is gonna happen when Metallica comes on stage. :D
Or Iron Maiden, X Japan, Guns & Roses... and a whole bunch of other old school LEGENDS :D People just go nuts man... :X

James : YEAH?!
Crowd : YEAH!!!
James : YEAH?!?!??!?!
Crowd : YEAH!!!!!!!!!

HAHAHAH!!!

guys...gotta make it more interesting...

whoever you had said is your biggest rock band you gotta say why? in your own justification

Ok. After all the crap I've said, I realised I didn't add my biggest band.

I'm up for Megadeth (Razrash gotta back me on this one)

23 years. 10 full albums...countless personnel changes...numerous world tours....millions of fans...using their influence towards a meaningful cause of charity. Still around and rocking.

I am only thankful Metallica kicked Dave Mustaine out of the band!

So Far...So Good...So What?

This won't be interesting..

What would be interesting is if we ask the members of our "biggest rock band", what is THEIR biggest rock band.

I'm very sure if we keep continuing this, we won't end up with one band, but we'd definately end up in a very small loop of bands. Wonder who they are...

Dude...that was what I said.."whoever your biggest rock band is"

Wah piang.. so subjective and circumstantial..

The problem with the label 'The Biggest Band In The World' lies with the word 'World'.

Everybody's world is different from everybody else's.

If I came from the Guns N Roses and Metallica era, of course they would be two of the biggest bands.

If I were a centre-parting haired non-English speaking Ah Beng (and now grown up to be Ah Seng), my biggest band would be maybe, Beyond.

If I were a ding-dong haired (short cropped with short fringe) Mat Rock, likely Scorpions would be my biggest band.

If I were effeminate and like whiney, non-manly voices - probably I'd think Coldplay or Maroon 5 are the biggest bands.

If I think mainstream music is not worth my brain cells and I want to appear intellectual and go all anti-establishment and independent, then <insert your favourite indie band name> probably IS the biggest band in the world.

For me the biggest bands would be the likes of U2, Metallica, Guns N Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers simply because their songs kickass till today and they have that universal appeal and instant recognition. Till today, people of all races and age can relate or at least know 5 of the popular hits from these bands.

No matter what their agenda is or was, no matter what politically incorrect things they did, no matter how old they are, no matter what - people still listen and play and jam their songs all over the world as we speak.

How many bands of today do you think can boast of this ability?

For me, don't need to be biased lah. Good music IS good music, mainstream or otherwise.

That's why I love music from anything from The Black Eyed Peas, King Diamond, Rob Zombie, Nonpoint, Olivia Ong, Laura Fygi, Simple Plan, Kelly Clarkson, Lenny Kravitz, Queen, Linkin Park to Deep Purple, Scorpions, Rob Thomas, Pink, David Tao and so, so many more...

I find it a little weird that Megadeth is the biggest rock band in this world.

I'm certain the likes of Megadeth, Metallica aren't rock bands.

Maybe if you say the biggest band in this world, yeah.

And another point, what is it about the biggest band? Do you mean the best band or literally the band with the largest number of members?

If it's the latter, I'll vote for Slipknot. Haha.

Hell yeah i'd back you up on that one!!!
basically, for me, the biggest rock band in the world, would be an orchestra. simply in terms of size of band members.

but in all seriousness, the band HAS to have listenable music, lyrics that can be identified with by a majority of people. of course, a band can't expect to appeal to EVERYONE. which is why we have different genre's for different people. :)

Besides, i may not be one to follow the majority all the time, but i find that these days, a lot of bands are being pushed to the forefront based on looks and marketing (i.e; boybands, taiwanese or otherwise) i think that there HAS to be musical talent as well, and aslo a certain level of technicality that would make them stand out.

but if they have to go for looks, i'd rather it be like 80's rock band during the glam rock/ hair metal era. as a friend of mine once put to me, " if you wanna be glam rock, you gotta look like a model/pornstar, or at least be hung like one." and i agree.

a good band has to have BOTH looks and skill. if not, whats the point?
