The Best Jamming Place and The worst...

Location location location. HAHA.

Demetri Martin?

Anyway, I like WeeLee (Aljunied). Big room, very cool, but I don't like the idea of people looking at us playing music cause it's kinda freaky. We look like some sort of a display. But the equipments there are good.

Not sure about best but:

Good studios: Fourtones, Beat Merchants, Stone Jamz, Boon (behind rooms, $17 per hr).

Okay studios: Music Ensemble (good gear but rooms very cramped).

Bad studios: Rhythm Masala (amps and mics have too much feedback, room is like a toilet!).

Fourtones....Been going there for years...

JE sucks, the auntie can close down the place and go home watch her chinese dramas.

hi,recently been to stone jamz and to my surprise the sound is good despite of what my friends say about the place and the brand of amps they using.but the place abit far and inside abit small.

for me...
the best jamming studio is at lavander i forgot the name... wmg or something
reason.... the drumset awwsome... my drummer loves it cause got double pedal, china, that small cybal ,cowbell.... the guitar amps also great....Marshall and laney half stacked ...owh yeah the studio guy also very kind :D

the worst one is without a doubt at khatib.... OMG!!! the amp so small....somemore budget one... my line 6 spider III way better than that crappy amp.... then the drums >.< the snare sound like paper....cybal all cracked.... tsk3 but hey what can u expect from a 8-10 dollars studio XD

Btw how come nowadays theres not much people jamming?used to have to wait or book early in dvance just to jam 1 to 2 hrs.

confused,

Are you referring to at Stone Jamz? My ex-band still jams there actually, but they've been busy lately. I for one haven't jammed in a long time because I've turned to songwriting instead. Stone Jamz didn't seem to have much traffic last time either, though. My band could book as last-minute as the day before, and if we were arriving late, we could ask for our jamming time to be changed.

Fourtones, though. That was another matter. I could never get a room unless I booked at least a week in advance.

The worst I've been to is this studio at Chinese Gardens area. Went there for fun. It was actually pretty good, but the stock guitars and basses were freaking horrible cheapskate stuff. And the bass amp was a little soft to cut through.

The worst studio I've been to.. Alif productions. The room smells like cigarettes all the time. Too much feedback from the amps, a lot of mats and the uncle doesnt know how to tie and tune the guitar at the headstock. The string came out of its post becos too much string wrapped around it and i had to pay extra. -_-

Funny thing about Beat Merchants is that I like the place. It is clean, neat, well-maintained and professional in appearance. However, my bandmates complain that when we jam at Beat Merchants, they can't hear my guitar. I wonder if a proper soundcheck would help, because my band wasn't in the habit of doing soundchecks. Come to think of it, I only started doing soundchecks when I started performing with SYFC.

In my opinion Fourtones is a whole lot messier and less organized in appearance compared with Beat Merchants, and sometimes the sound is too sharp because there's barely any wall insulation. But despite this, I still find it one of the better studios I have been to. Perhaps their equipment has wear and tear because Fourtones is very popular. Lots of bands jam there...

Come to think of it, I just remembered a gripe I had with Stone Jamz. I don't know why but they were often late in opening up the studio for us. We've had to wait outside, knocking every now and then, calling in, before they would open. But they were very accommodating and allowed us to change our timings if the studio wasn't booked after our slot.

Yeah... Beat merchants still the best... cheap n good... 12 bucks/hr

while at simei (eastech) like wtf... the 12 bucks room.... the aircon leaking... den got mosquito flying inside!! got drumstick chips all over on the floor.. the double ped must kick harder... the room so small.. the amps suck... n all the drums in diff room sound different... the guitars and bass some strings snap out... the microphone so rusty....every thing like tht for 12 bucks?? beat merchant beat them oredi sah...

In terms of acoustics, equipment and service, the best place I've ever been to is Backbeat Studios...they really deliver magnificently in all those areas. However, because I'm just a lowly paid intern, I usually settle for Beat Merchants...which is good also, but slightly inconsistent from room to room. I usually prefer Room 5 as it's on the ground floor=privacy. Plus, they use it for recording so it usually has the best equipment.

The absolute worst would have been Tiet @ Outram area. Equipment fairly decent, but the prices were outrageous last I jammed there. Acoustics also nothing to write home about, and size of the studio...fooyoh. Also I had a bad experience once where my band booked a slot to jam and ended up waiting outside for 2 hours because there was a power cut and no one bothered informing us. Gave us a free session back, but damage was done. Wouldn't jam there again now even if they offered us 10 free sessions.

beat merchants is good.the place is spacious.but i don't like the marshall avts.sound sandy to me.prefer the mg100.just my opinion.and after jamming, there's no transport except taxi.sigh

EugeneSmasher-

Hmm, I don't really face that problem in rooms 5 and 3 of beat merchants. Rarely jam in other rooms there. try standing directly infront of ur amp the next time because the sound isolation in those rooms are quite zai, u don't hear reflected sounds from walls as much as compared to other studios. one reason why the mics don't pickup feedback as easily too.

growlingsoulpup-

yeah! room 5 and room 3 ftw! the 2 largest rooms there.. haha, the best sounding ones imho.

confused-

POD X3 Live direct input ftw! i realise the mixers in beat merchants are slightly above average in local studios. i can't remember what model they are but they're the 10 channel yamahas with built in compressors in the first 4. works wonders for the microphone. and the last 2 channels are stereo inputs, great for me and my keybordist who'll plug in our equipment in stereo for some real aural orgasm (esp for the drummer cuz he's sitting infront of the left and right loudspeakers) lol
