Telecaster's "Twang"

i went to Swee lee (bras basah) just now

btw, is the John 5 squier tele good? (had been eyeing this guitar for quite some time)

well, i do not recommend you to buy anything from that place, they even over priced their guitar picks. pls source for fender elsewhere, i'm pretty sure there will be more ethical music business elsewhere in singapore who will provide a more personal and friendly service.

this is one of them i had come across just now in another thread.

@MHD: According to the Swee Lee website, there is a Squier Tele that you might be interested in: “Squier Fat Telecaster” It’s listed as $588.50. This guitar has a S-H pickup configuration, and according to the description, the single coil has high output. I am unable to find this particular model on the official Squier website.

On the same page, there is also “Squier OBEY Graphic Telecaster HS Collage” and “Squier OBEY Graphic Telecaster HS Propaganda” that’s if you don’t mind the graphics. These are H-S guitars which are going for $533.93. It should be what you are looking for, if you don’t mind the graphics. Check up with their Sims drive branch to see if they have them in stock.

Now, if you go to the Squier’s website, there are more options for you. There’s the J5 Telecaster (H-H pickup configuration), the Vintage Modified Tele SH (S-H pickup configuration), the Vintage Modified Tele SSH (S-S-H pickup configuration) and the Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom (H-H pickup configuration).

But where do you get them from since SL doesn’t have these in stock? You can try asking Brendon from BGW Guitars at http://www.bgwguitars.com/ to see if he can bring them in for you. His prices can roughly be gauged by prices seen on http://www.musiciansfriend.com/ which they claim is the cheapest online store in the world.

So, since I’m feeling kind, I’ll do some conversion for you. (Prices are just estimates, actual prices are most probably higher, since these guitars are way cheaper than the ones he usually brings in. Check with Brendon for actual price)

J5 Telecaster: 379.99 USD = 520.844 SGD

Vintage Modified Tele SH: 349.99 USD = 479.717 SGD

Vintage Modified Tele SSH: 349.99 USD = 479.717 SGD

Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom: 249.99 USD = 342.649 SGD

Squier OBEY Graphic Telecaster HS Collage: 279.99 USD = 383.777 SGD

Squier OBEY Graphic Telecaster HS Propaganda: 279.99 USD = 383.777 SGD

In my opinion, the Vintage Modified Telecaster Custom (H-H pickup configuration) is the guitar you are truly looking for. It has 2 humbuckers, 2 tone controls, 2 volume controls. It's a Les Paul's soul in a Tele's body.. problem of "twang" totally solved! and price? should not exceed S$500. The only problem? Can't try before you buy

edit: shit, now that I've done some research, this guitar is really making me GAS!

WOW! Hey! thanks alot for researching! you really help me by listing down the teles. the Squier Vintage Modified tele custom is really tempting me now. since i'm more to les paul. but the only concern i have now is the neck profile. tested the california series yesterday. didnt like the neck. looking at the tele custom, can someone explain to me the "C-Shape" neck?

Other Teles to Look at, Not just Squier

Hi, maybe you can take a look at other Teles, like G&L. I've got these 2 here; twang or no twang, they sound amazing!

The different PUPs configuration and bridges actually give the 2 teles very unique sounds.

I know Woodworkz still has a couple of the G&L Tribute Series (take a look at Bluesboy) going at really good price and will most likely suit your needs.

oh ya, i forgot to mention that the tele i tested out is kinda old? the neck has like dends in it. so mayb that cause the prob. also, the whole neck is bare wood. if let say i get the tele custom, it comes with the gloss neck, it will be more smoother rite?

actually, thumbs tend to stick to glossy surface more than to matt surface, but whether it affects playing, depends on individual gripping style. for me, i personally prefer matt finish over gloss because i like the smoothness of it.

good examples are billiard cues, the hand grip side of the cue is glossed, the part where one slides it on the left hand (for rightys) is matt.

If you got sweaty palms especially, then the stick will be very obvious. For gloss finishes. My Paul has a gloss neck (as do all i guess). I love to play it for the first 20 minutes but hate cleaning up after that. I prefer the matt finish of a strat or tele. Dents don't affect the shape of the neck that much, unless you're talking about a chunk of wood maybe 0.5cm deep or more.

i do not have sweaty palms. maybe i'll go to shops testing teles then. and see which one is best. thanks for the help guys! really help me alot. THREAD CLOSED!
