techniques for fast rolling

yo drummers!

anyone have any recommendations for techniques to do fast rolling? I eamn those continuous hits rolls not the 2 sticks bouncing to one sound marching roll XD

huh continuous hits? please elaborate. like open and close technique? and its not bouncing! its all wrist and finger action... for me.

oh i mean example are like those fills around the snare and the 3 toms which follows 16th notes. how to play they smooth and fast :D

practice singles on like a single drum first....

then go on to practicing singles around the kit...

then sing out what you want to play and play it after that...

start slow, climax fast, end slow:)

position ur toms at a comfortable angle for rolling. then practice slowly and make sure that ur strokes are clean and defined and are in perfect timing. then gradually increase ur rolling speed. practising this with heavy sticks then later switching to lighter sticks wld help too.

the thing about rolling is that you can always roll. is just how clean and accurate the sound gets. soo... thats the trick, not how fast you can do it.

hmm the heavy then light sticks thing must be careful lah if not you not used to the switch it can affect you...

go slow man, the trick is detail. everything gd is in the details of how do u do it. dun auto pilot when u prac, pay attention to the sound and ur hands movements. like tai chi when u go slow and make sure everything is working like it should.
ur left is normally weaker, so look at ur right handand try to mirror wat ur right is doing. remember to stay relaxed and loose. hit the same spot on the drum first, make sure u can do tht. when u can hit the same spot without thinking, and the sound of the strokes are even.
after thiss start to play with ur hands apart to find diff sounds.(this is just the snare drum by the way. also have a metronome dude.
place the metronome on 60 and just play 8th notes, then move on to 16th.
on 16th notes u can't slip up cause once ur out u can feel it. do this on a drum pad not a drum cause u need to be able to hear the notes cleanly without the over ring of the snare, or u can place the pad on the snare.
once u can play 16ths accurately and cleanly, take the click to 4th notes and play 16th over it and u find tht u will be very on the click and not slip at all.
after u can do 60 on the click start moving up the speed. keep relaxed it will take u anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks if u spend an least an hour a day. i recommend 2hrs if u can. STAY RELAXED ur band members will apreciate it cause u'll not sound harsh. be like waterrrrrrrrrrrr(bruce lee said)

wow thanks for the tips!

i think i really need a metronome and durm pad XD anywhere noes where can i get them best? price and quality :D

haha i use dr.beat, got it at the sale at sweelee. its a Db30 for 40dollars. i think now you can get it at music theme for 55dollars. it has a tap function which is very good for playing along to bands. oh well its up to you, quite costly. another thing... haha it looks great compared to the other metronomes, but that doesnt really matter.

i love the e-pad from drumresources. it doesnt have much rebound, which is why it's an excellent way of practicing to strengthen your wrist, so you dont need heavier sticks. however, heaveir sticks plus pad - lagi better!

hmm its called the E-Pad at Drum Resources at Peninsula Plaza. Cost is... 52dollars, or two dollars up/down around there. Anyways it's a great pad to me, but i suggest you try it first. Some people do not like it.

i don't know if this helps. but it worked very well for me.

IF I AM NOT WRONG!

dennis chambers once said if u put sumting inbetween your armpit, your will develope muscles faster. so try putting like 1 thick book underyour armpit and do your rolls around the drum. then try taking them off. the results can be seen immediate. works for me.. but .. NO harm trying! :D

Regarding 1st post:
You mean fast single strokes right?
Well, firstly, you need to get your sticking even. As in getting your notes cut evenly through the time signature. And your volume too.
And to get all this down, start slow. Like what everyone else is saying.
There are no instant magic formulas to speed.
Patience is a true virtue in this. And perserverence of course.

What a lot of drummers recommend is to keep practicing on a pillow or something soft.
So that ultimately, you won't depend on the rebound as a crutch.
Otherwise, you'll find yourself hitting the toms slower than on the tight snare.

There are many ways to blast, finger blasting, push-pull and more...

something worth practicing is doing single strokes with only your fourth and fifth fingers on the stick. it strengthens the back part of the hand. hah well good luck on that im having problems with my flams.

thats for the info guys, i really find myself somehow hitting the snare faster than the tom which i think id due to the rebound

hmm does the weight of the sticks affects the speed? like lighter = faster? or heavy more rebound = faster?

hmm weight affects sound bah... but yeah also the speed... because your arms will have more to bear and i think less rebound than a light stick... just a conjucture...

actually this is a personal experience. it's great to practice on a pillow but after that must move on to the bouncy surfaces... if not you cannot like coordinate the super fast strokes...
