taste

Hey guys, I was wondering to myself, is there really such a thing as bad and good taste for music or is it all a matter of free individual opinion on what's good or bad? What do you guys have to say?

Definitely depends on individuals and most importantly, it doesn't matter what others like. Just enjoy what you like.

Haha. When I first heard Cannon Rock by Funtwo, I thought it was genius. Now that it has became a freaking cliche on YouTube, and every guitarist seems to be judging each other based on whether he or she is able to shread the song, that stuff just annoys me!

Anyway back the the topic. I agree with James to a certain extent. To each his or her own. I try to pursue the notion of individuality even though I do have taste. However, I'm starting to begin to think that many authoritative people or publications out there tend to decide for we the listeners on what is good and bad taste. Let's take this for instance: From a neutral standpoint, a casual observer would probably deem Rolling Stone magazine a more legit source of music information compared to say, Alternative Press or maybe Downbeat magazines.

Furthermore, awards like Grammies tend to make things black and white so yeah. Just sharing my opinion.

Hey fiq, wassup!

Actually. I disagree. I think Cannon Rock requires a good command of guitar technicality. And to translate its original classical form into a fast-paced, beat driven track, that's something to behold. But yeah, like mentioned above, almost everyone out there is trying to take a jab at it just to showcase themselves, making it such a cliche...

yeah, i wanted to get to that point. when i said newbies would think it's cool, it sorta becomes a "fashion statement" as you said, people just wanna compare if they could shred into that song.

if they just have a little bit more originality, distinct from funtwo, i'll be happy enough to listen...

Ah aight, but let's not veer away from the topic. I'd like to know what people thing about taste and is a preference thing or is it standardized by a system.

Goodness, you must have really bad taste when it comes to girls!

I don't see the validity in this question. Nothing of philosophical content, nothing technical, nothing to ponder about, just a factor of choice in this material world and how choice is defined by your society. It simply goes like this:

if [ $choice = good ]; then
like
else
dislike
fi

just like wad soft said , it's up to the person.
for me it's thrash metal , glam metal , death metal , ... lol basicly stuff from the 70's 80's and early 90's ...

taste.
good?
or not?

you just know when the person has good or bad taste. It comes naturally..when you see then you will straight away say "damn, bad taste". It's a totally intuitive reaction.

If you put too much thought into deciding whether it's good or bad taste..then it's already a biased opinion on a person's taste in music.

It all depends on what you think. Taste is a form of other people's opinion. You cannot possibly say "DAMN! I've got brilliant taste in music".

Or can you?
You be the judge.

I don't believe in good or bad taste. I hate it when people say "that band sucks", "worst guitarist ever", or "this band should just die". Opinions people! You can't tell people what to listen to. You can't have one genre you like in this world and expect everyone listening to it. It doesn't work that way. You don't expect people like Paris Hilton listen to death metal do you? Actually I'm happy there's different types of music. If everyone is your "good taste", what would be boring.

Of course, I do tend to make jokes about music I don't listen to. But those are just jokes. I don't make death threats or have any grudge on them.
