Talent

I've posted this topic before on "what's your definition of a talented musician" but the response was poor.So I'm here posting this topic once again....

I'm sure we all have heard of people saying "hey that guy is a talented guitarist" , "you mean it took you such a short time to learn this hard song , mannn you're talented!!!!" or "oh myyyyy gosh you can play the entire song without looking at the score book?! , you're talented!!!!"

I know in theory talent only contributes a very small percentage towards the overall success of a musician but I just want to know what's your personal definition of a talented musician...

So what's your definition of a talented musician?

talented ah...for me talented person can play faster, understand better and improve very quickly compare to the non talented 1...but about playing the songs without looking at the scorebook, everybody can do that...cheerios

Someone who is good @ wat he does or interest in :? Maybe....

As for me, 'talented' means the person can connect to me in a special way. Be it the way they play, sing, perform, etc. Personally, it's not so much of the fastest, most complex techniques or abilities, but that magic/mojo/vibe/impact that person makes me feel I guess :)

I disagree on the 'playing faster' = a factor in being recognized as talented, but that's just me. :)

Did you turn into Yngwie in 6 months? :) I have a suspicion you did.

Well, I never answered the question, but I know what is 'no talent' - I've been playing nearly 20 years and I still think I suck and I worked really hard for a number of years to attain that status of 'sucks at guitar'.

So, although I think I'm not a 'bad' guitarist by any means (I think I'm ok) I don't think I have God-given talents except that I have hands, ears and eyes and the will to put in some effort to get better.

Someone who can entertain, knows what to do in different situations and most importantly, hold a tune well, be it singing or instrument wise.

nope vern.. i dunno any singaporean that did but i have some american friends covering tony macalpine after playing for 6 months and they do it flawlessly.. incredible

The real "X-factor". Very few will have it.

You can be superb in technicality, but when playing in front of audience, they don't warm to you. Then too bad. You DON'T have it.

Yeah - there's always some hotshot kid out there who can blow you away.

So, the thing I do (at least what I keep telling myself) is to concentrate on developing my individuality. At least there's nobody out there better at being me than ME. Despite that, I still suck at that.. :)

but then again.. that is my point of view.. for TALENT.. it's like something ur destined to do and ur borned with it i guess? lol.. oh well..no one knows if ur destined to do anything anyway so consider my posts on here useless lol..

i'd like to hear definitions from the rest.. whadddya guys sayyyy?

EDIT : some of my examples include Ritchie Kotzen, Blues Saraceno, Yngwie Malmsteen(he was meddling with the axe when he was 7 - 8years old).
Saraceno got his first record at 16 i think..
Kotzen was touring at 16...

cheers..

Well said. *Claps*

I remember this concert by Whitley Sec or something at Cathay Cineleisure, there was this kid, had a Steve Vai Universe Guitar, Vox Tonelab SE, shredded like crazy, WAH-ed all the way. Crazy technique. But the kids faces said it all. It was like "Uh, okay..." A case of not connecting to the audience.

talent. LOL.

talent = a little flair + passion + interest + lots of hardwork.

flair ie gift - everyone's born with it; everyone has a flair for something, be it the arts or whatever.

some are gifted ie born with a natural flair for doing something better and quicker than others, but noone's born talented.

IMHO.

'playing faster' -> i think you get the wrong idea, wad i mean its not playing faster as in speed, its like normal person need 3 days to play some stuff, but this guy only took 1 day, thats wad i meant
