From what I understand when I ask one salesperson, they keep the switch knobs ever since they discovered them going missing (customers conveniently stealing them...?). Probably you had the bad luck of asking a not so knowledgeable salesperson? :)
 
I guess it depends on who serves you. I went in one day hi on alcohol and got myself a fair deal on a PGM. The staff has been patient with me, even though I look like those who wouldn't normally buy anything. Both staff and customer is happy.

That might just be the reason, of course i could be wrong, but i do remember a couple years back when i got the Ibanez S370, it didn't have a pickup selector switch knob on as well. Only when the deal was closed that they took out the package containing all the necessary tools and fitted on the selector knob.
 
I hope I was wrong too. I must admit I always have bad luck when it comes to buying stuff I really like ... *sigh*. Someone go get that last ergodyne and prove me wrong.

By the way, did ibanez cease production of ergodyne series?
