Swapping Tubes on the Guyatone Metal Monster

Im thinking of swapping out the stock Sovtek 12ax7 to maybe an EH or JJ ECC803s. any other recommendations? has anyone done this before?

I used to have a Metal Monster and swapped the Sovtek to a EH. Not much difference to my ears.

If it was full tube it might make a diff but usually this kinda low power tube pedals have opamp clipping which pretty much does the coloring of the tone and gain levels...imo.

so in your opinion its not worth changing tubes? cos one tube is abt 16 bucks too. not as cheap as i would wan it lol. but still old tubes needs to be changed right?

i swapped mine to Tungsol's 12AX7- there's added top end but it's not that significant. if you don't blast your volume, it couldn't be heard.

Yup, change em only if they are not working or noisy (which is unlikely due to low power) and there may be differances but pretty much insignificant unless that tube is overdriven.
Even in a clean amp the above may be applied for preamp tubes.
Just the opposite for a cranked or a high gain amp tho, the pre amp tube & phase inverter type, needs that much required attention.

Btw ...save your pocket money and get a real tube amp

here is a little secret on tubes.

Listen to goose. If you want a solid high gain distortion, save and get a solid tube amp for that purpose. I've taken that path with no regrets. Tube amps nowadays are getting really versatile... Even those single channel ones!

indeed i have done that! my blackheart is coming in end of july hoho can't wait. thx for the great information guys!
