anyone tried to compare these? cause im thinking of getting either one of these. i play rock to a lil metal. so..i need your help. and those who have one or both of these gears, your inputs would be appreciated! :D thanks! ohh. btw. any idea on where to get the riot? :O

o.O know the pros and cons of the riot? wanted to get the 7th. but no moolah ar bro. T.T hahaha..woodwerks is their dealer? :O

i did. but would like to hear inputs from softies. and would be best since some here own them. whats the diff between IC chips and JFET?

IMO JFET and MOSFET drives are usually overdrives as they clean up really nicely and sound warmer, smoother, rounder AKA 'tube-like'. However, they tend to mush up under higher gain. IC drives tend to be edgy and don't clean up as well as FET drives, but they can usually take more gain and maintain clarity, 'hifi-ness', hence they are pushed as 'distortions'.

Of course, you have to factor in the circuit, amp, pickup output among many other things. There are also many exceptions so this is all IMO. That all being said, I think both types have their places on any pedalboard.

i see i see. i didnt know about this. thanks. which pedals above have what?

guitar77 is the dealer for suhr, not woodwerkz, u shld check out the riot there.

i cant give an opinion i never tried the tc electronics drive that u r interested in, but i own the riot and although it is a GREAT pedal and i love it, it cannot do metal. absolutely no. just good driving hard rock (just to clarify matters im referring to using the riot as yr primary drive over a clean amp; if the riot is pushing an already overdriven amp alreay, then it CAN do metal, but so can a whole lot of other pedals). It has quite a lot of gain, maybe it touches 80's hair metal, but it can't do pantera/bodom/lamb of god/dream theatre etc etc.

hope this helps

Woodwerkz DOES stock the Riot at a decent price of $290+

The Riot is an awesome drive pedal for Modern tones.. Im using one as my main drive. The Riot is able to get from Marshall JCM tones to Diezel/Bogner Tones when tweaked accordingly. There is also the mids toggle switch allowing you to adjust mids from rounded to flat mids to scooped mids. Yes like the post above, the Riot is really sweet for 80s stuff ( Whitesnake/Europe/ Def Leppard -> Steve Clarke era ). Its possible for metal but if you wanna compare it to the even higher gain stuff like the Blackstar distortion, the riot does not have as much Chug in it as compared to the latter.

Its impossible to list out which pedals have jfet etc. Simple reason that there are too many pedals out there.

The riot responds to pickups accordingly. If you youtube the demonstration by Mark Day you would see that the Riot can do rather high gained tones due to his EMGS. When i used it with my Classic 57s I never expected them to get such tones and true enough i was right. High gain still, not just as high gain.

I have not played or heard the TC electronic nova drive hence im unable to comment on it.

Another alternative is the Tonefreak Severe ( doubt anyone brings in to SG, may be wrong though. Saw it sell on soft. )
Similar qualities to the Riot, but the Riot gets my pick.
It may not be the most versatile drive that can get you amazing tones. You want tonal options? The 7th is good. But till now, i have not regretted once purchasing the Riot. My only itch is to hear the Tonefreak Severe compared to it with my own ears instead of some youtube demo.

superpotato_30: diezel? nice. i see i see. shall check it out later! thanks for the info. appreciate lots man! :D

anybody experience the nova drive? :D

The Riot is touted to work best with dead clean amps. I don't see the Riot as chugga chugga Pantera metal too but it will do your 80's metal and will very do hard rock very well.

How about a Barber Dirty Bomb? YouTube it up. It's not too bad actually.

I find that jfets have a sizzle and trebly "grind" that I dislike when run at high gain. Like the upper harmonics are over excited... but run with a dark amp/tone/guitar/equipment and this isn't apparent. Also, notes have an artificial "separation" to them. The most glaring thing however, is when you play a neck pickup - high gain jfets never have that round-ness and squishy-ness of a neck pickup tone... Op-Amps don't exhibit those qualities and they just sound polite and smooth. They have problems cutting thru the mix though. However, I'm king in my bedroom and I can crank my volume to cut thru the backing track. ;)

For comparisons - listen to any demo of the 7th on youtube, then listen to a Wampler Triple Wreck.

The Riot pedal is a really good pedal. Bought it at a rather high price but it was worth the money. I got mine off ebay and shipped to SG.

:D

@shredcow: wow.. the toneczar is. o.O it sounds...very death. xD haha...tried the wreck before. didnt really like it. the birty bomb was not too bad either.

so favour goes to riot and 7th. thanks for the info guys!

so the riot is smooth when using neck pickup on upper frets while pedals such as toneczar is more sharp?
