suggestion on jazz music?

I disagree.

Jazz is academic and a thinking man's music. It's stuff like metal and head bobbing trash that brings out he primeval beast.

Hey Blo,

I actually only semi-agree with your quote above so please also allow me to add the following.

Jazz, metal, reggae etc are forms of music at the start and at end of the day. All forms require thinking for sure but all also eventually lead to some sort of expression be it head-bobbing, salsa dancing or even feet tapping.

I used to listen to bands like Nirvana when i was growing up but now i also listen to Jazz and latin etc....and i still get the same kind of "high", same kind of "in the zone" type of buzz when i get engrossed and carried away.

Therefore music in general, no matter what, will bring out the good and the beast in anyone who's willing to let go, who's willing to "rock out".

This is my humble opinion and I dont mean to hurt anybody here :)

rla.

Hey man...I welcome and respect your opinion even if you disagree. That's what a forum is for. It won't be fun if we all start agreeing on everything and end up doing nothing else but patting each other on the back.

What i am saying is that the improvisational nature of jazz demands a more studied and academic approach since it normally takes material from other genres and turn it into something completely different yet familiar. Most jazz tunes are derived from popular standards of the day...and we are getting Beatles and other contemporary works being played by jazz musicians more and more. Someone said that one of the true test of time for a piece of music is when a jazz musician turns it into a jazz arrangement. Bach, Beatles and Bacharach have all been "jazzified"

Who knows, one day, we may get Nirvana and Oasis into the jazz charts.

I am no exponent of the latest fads in the music of today's generation and I do not think much of it's emphasis on visual images at the expense of musical content. But that's only my opinion.

A few decades ago, my parents generation dismissed rock n'roll and the Rolling Stones - but they were wrong.

Music is so subjective that's why we can never completely agree. So just enjoy what you will lah !
