experimenting

Hi,

I am basically learning (source: Microphone forums) and experimenting with the belive that I shall find the right microphnes which can handle all my needs., vocal, acoustic intrument and percussion recording.

mic

Hi,

C4000B and shortlisted few others, like C414 B XL II, baby bottle (blue mic) factory paired C1000 etc and saving money

Suggestions please

I would appreciate very much if suggestions given for mics for recording ethnic percussions & other ethnic instruments like ERHU etc

You should get a few different kinds if you are recording a variety of them quite often.Get a dynamic mic like the SM57 for capturing the attack of instruments. The blue mic might do a good job with its amazing headroom. Have a small diaphragm condensor for strings.ONe good mic would be the Rode NT3.If you want a stereo pair, get the NT5.I've heard good things about the C1000s thou.

The last one you might consider getting is a large diaphragm condenser. This can be used to capture the ambience sound. The beauty of the instrument. If placed properly,it can make your instrument sound larger than life.THere are so many great LDCs around. The baby bottle,NT1a,KSM32,TLM 103,Luna,etc.It all depends on your budget here.

Thanks

Thanks heclak for the suggestions. I have read good reviews for SM57, NT5, KSM32 in some microphone forums. I shall check them out all in the coming weeks before buying.

Good Mic

I think I have all other essential gadgets except good mics. I am into buying good mics like my KOrg Triton, [I dont regret buying a brand new Triton+Moss+SCSI etc from CityMusic, even after the release of Extreme and Motif ES] so that I can have one or two live track in my compositions in future. I have a good collection of licensed sample CD for ethinic insturmnts, at present, which I use in my Giga

if you are looking for a good condenser but you can't spend on a baby bottle,i think the 8 ball would serve your needs very well too.Since you don't have a properly treated room,a fantastic mic might probably kill your tracks by picking up too much unwanted sounds. This is true for LDCs,not so much affecting SDCs.If you are looking for a budget SDC,i have heard good things about the behringer B5.Worth a try at that price.

What mics do you use now.the NT1a is great value for money but you might find it a little harsh on the highs but some people like it for that purpose. It can add clarity.

no live recording /vocal at home. Percussion from Sample CD & I create my own loop. Vocal in professional studio. But a room will be ready in couple of weeks.

I would like to buy a pair of mics for percussion and one more condenser (I have C4000 AKG) for (<$1.5K) for acoustic string instrument. So that I can use 2 large dia. condenser and psition them in such a way to get maximum out of the instrument. I can afford to buy 3-4 mics only

Thanks once again for your suggestions

FOr percussions,i heard great things with a pair of Rode NT3s or a pair of NTKs .FOr stringed instruments,i wouldn't use 2 LDCs.i think one LDC would capture alot of the instrument already.Unless you have a great room sound and you want to capture that too. Then i would use one for an ambient mic.A LDC and SDC would work great together for stringed instruments. The SDC will capture the attack of the instrument if placed properly and make your instrument sound crisp.

A SM57 would work wonders for capturing the hard attack of percussions like bongos, conga and the works.FOr smaller percussions i would go for a stereo pair SDC.Like a pair of NT3 or the NT5s.MAybe you can try the B5s.I think they would do great too.Someone told me that they can put up a fight with the NT5s.
You already have a great LDC already.Maybe look for something that has a different characteristic.I think the C4000 is not very bright.Maybe you want something that is brighter like the NT1a.if you want to use LDCs as a stereo pair. You have no choice but to get another C4000 which would most probably blow ur budget.
This is a list i would try.
SM57
NT1a
NT3 x 2
if you need a stereo pair LDC.get another NT1a.Just my opinion.

Hi heclak !!!!! Can I use the same LDC for different vocals. What in your opinion are the best few LDC for vocals ?

Thanks

KMA

Of course you can do that! However, the same LDC may not work as well with every voice. If you ask me,i would consider a U87 or TLM103.haha.But i think these are out of your budget considering you have to buy 2 more SDCs.Maybe the TLM103 is within reach. What is your budget. There are many LDCs around below 1k.
