Anyone know where to get the finish removed from guitar body as I want to take back to bare wood. ??Thanks.

guitar connection? guitar workshop? or you can ask around, lots of softies here do DIY work. cheers! :D

paint stripper ... liquid in a tin can ...from hardware store !!
Caution : Extremely corrosive and caustic ...Please handle with care !!!
Get a good pair of quality gloves and a respiratory mask and goggles.

just apply with brush and wait for the paint to lift ....apply till all is clear.
Remember gives out bad vapour and watch your eyes 8O !!

...do it in a well ventilated area !!

goose what do you do to remove the residue from the body? I'm sure there will be some that will be soaked into the body?

it does come off ed...but for the stubborn ones use soft steel brush (found in your local hardy ) later you can fine sand to remove lines ...if any !!

Btw a guitar paint process usually starts with a clear wash coat to clog the pores and followed by colour coats !! ...

ahhh... and I was thinking of using isopropyl alcohol to wipe out all that nasty stripper soaked in.

btw... have you tried removing dyed tops before? like the top wood is dyed and clear coat applied aka PRS etc.

I'm just wondering if the dye really seeps deep into the wood... that'll be a whole chunk of wood removed man.

nope ..not tried that before...but usually considering a smooth wood surfaces the dye soaks maybe the most 0.8 mm!!
But there might be difficulty in dyed wood i presume !!

0.8mm is quite a bit man.... imagine hand sanding! whoaaa....

lucky for me I've got an orbital sander that i've yet to put into use...

time oh time... oh bloody time....

but hey ...i assume when you strip a dyed wood ...the dye becomes faint ..!!ooohhwah ...then you just oil it !! translucent mojo baby !! :D

hahaha... and it'll look friggin spotty too!

fugly guitars finishes will be the next fashionable hot item i tell ya...

canon, listen to goose!! or get him to do it for ya!! he'll do a good job!!

the last time i just sanded all the paint away. hah. was really messy man! REALLY messy. but turned out alright, managed not to alter the body contour.

alot of the paint strippers available locally dont do much to those thick poly finishes on most guitars nowadays...i ended up using an orbital sander and a full week of elbow grease...

ok i got the paint stripper part.
now whats recommended to fill in the mahagony grain before doing a clear finish?
its either that or i'm gonna just use wood filler to level the grain then spray it matt black :P

its mahagony, so if i dont fill it in, when i spray the finish, it wont be level rite :P
i guess wood filler is the best option to fill in the grain if im gonna put a solid finish over it.
either that or a nice cherry gibson finish, which is gonna take time :P

paint stripping

Hi again guys, thanks for the suggestions so far. I have partly sanded of the finish in one corner to see how deep the caot is and also to see if the clear coat penetrated the wood but it looks OK so far. Reason for strip is I wanted a natural stain but got a semi blond finish from the people who dd the job for me, so i end up doing it myelf.

There's this new kinda paint remover I bought from Handy fix some time back - no smell, can wash up with water & doesnt "burn" yer hands - forget the name but its an Aussie - brand.

Used it to strip an Amex Std sometime back - great results..

ask around for it
