I noe this thread looks damn dumb like those newbie ones, well i'm a noob la, cant say i'm not one..lolz..

Ok, I heard about this Dunlop String Conditioners,
sadly i juz did some restringing (a gibson E700 gauge .10)
It rusted within a week..and i'm not the type who hav sweaty palms..

Hence, i'm here to ask for some feedbacks on any string conditioners u guys hav used,
(let's say u use the conditioner after every play)
does the strings feels like they are new everytime u touch it?

I miss those few days where i could really *physically* feel the strings are very2 new,
and i dun like restringing..(no money!!)

and please,if u're gonna say "go and try it urself, it's all up to u, ur own preferences," i'd prefer u not saying anything and leave this thread to ppl who are kind enough to help, Thank you!

i personally use GHS Fast Fret. i've seen some complaining about stickiness on the fretboard after using, but i personally don't feel any of it. wipe before AND after playing. strings are spongier to press, and yes they do last longer.

i did a comparison. i have acoustic guitar A and acoustic guitar B. both were strung with D'Addarios. both received about 30 minutes of play per day. A was treated with Fast Fret, B wasn't.

i'd restring when the e string begins to rust (strumming hard on it would cause it to snap anyways). Fast Fret allowed the strings on A to last about a week longer than B. B was restrungs after 20 days.

and yes, you might want to consider the use of other strings, coated and treated ones in particular. since you're talking about guitar strings, i wouldn't recommend DR because i've only tried their bass strings.. and bass strings last much longer by default. i just restrung my acoustic with Cleartone strings though (:

There's another option, which I found to be really good and convenient aside from the GHS Fast Frets...

ErnieBall WonderWipes - String Cleaner

Wow! This thread is good!. I'm a noob to string cleaners too!

Worth a try on the strings mentioned like GHS and Dunlop. I'm going to try the Dunlop strings soon.

I've heard from a friend to treat your strings with lemon oil overnight before restringing. Does that help?.

I have a string rust problem, too. I've tried many different string cleaner products like the Dunlop and Fast Fret. And lemon oil, too. Lemon oil will make strings rust. I've even tried soap. Yesh, Dettol soap (since soap is alkaline, it neutralise the acidic sweat). Tiny weeny bit on damp fingers, run down the strings and wiped clean. Works quite well for me too but it's a chore. And i dun think soap is good for the fingerboard.

The Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes seems to work the best so far. It comes in a roll which u can tear off (like toilet paper). I normally just use a scissor and cut a small piece. It seems it'll last quite a while.

strings rust in a week? my strings dont rust in a month! hahah. but still i restring every now and then. whenever i feel like it. haha

wow the ernie ball wonder wipes sounds convenient. how much isit and where can i get it?
i dont think i can google that(say in advance since some people will ask people to google this and that).

i swear by the polymer coating.

my gibson strings last almost forever when i use them (the tone will die eventually but it doesnt rust)

i wipe my strings with a microfibre cloth then apply it everytime after i play

the only time i change strings is before a gig, because i want the freshest tone i can get

Where the guitar is kept is very important with respect to this issue, as well as what to use on the strings after playing.

Personally, I just clean the strings with a piece of toilet paper after playing (make sure you clean the underside of the strings also).

Air humidity has a lot to do with this. Which must be a big issue in Singapore, i'm assuming.

One good thing you could try is to keep your guitar in its case, but keep some silica gel in the case also (try the little sachets you get when you buy a new pair of shoes - they are ideal. Alternatively, you would be able to buy them somewhere).

I dun think so. It's oil. Last time i tried. It stops it from rusting. But you wouldnt wanna use it everytime u play cause it might kill the fretboard (remember the use sparingly).

EVH used to boil his strings before stringing... Apparently it stretches the strings and lasts longer... How true? I dunno... never tried.
