string breakage

my bass strings on my fixed bridge schecter has been snapping like crazy, in fact i have went thorugh 3 sets of strings in the past week alone because of the
snapping bottom strings.

i notice that the strings would snap at TOM bridge area, they seemed to get "uncoiled" or something at that area during breakage. the strings dont really acutally break, just get uncoiled at that spot.

is my tom bridge too sharp or something? can i just file the string slot with a nail file? i need to get a quick answer before im tempted to install the new strings i just bought again

No nail file please.

1) Use fine sandpaper to get rid of the blurrs that may be causing the breakage. Don't know how fine. Maybe more experienced forummers can help.

2) Replace the saddles with Graph Tech string savers.

observe the TOM 'V' incision where the strings rests. if it's sharp/ you see the presence of burrs, sand it off if it's accessible. otherwise, invest in a budget replacement TOM to see if it's truly a sharp spot to be blamed.

I would probably say Graph Techs or other similar after market replacements as a last resort if the string breakage is not from the burrs (which is the most likely reason) but from your playing technique.

I used to have the same sort string breakage problem (record was 3 strings a set I think). Sanding didn't help but I didn't go as far as replacing the saddles and instead adjusted my playing by being a bit less aggressive with my strumming arm.

in all cases it broke when i started some heavy palm muting, but the problem is that the latest one broke just a few hours ago after i restringed it last night.

prob i just replace all the saddles at once. are they expensive?

bro before you go off buying anything. i suggest you go get some 400 grit sandpaper for metal. fold it in half and use the edge and sand down the slot a bit see if breakage still occurs.

50 cent remedy instead of 50 bucks if it works.

hey babelfish, thanks for the help! i assume i only need to order the saddles not the superbridge right?

Yeah. No point spending so much to replace a bridge with one that you already have. =p Just giving you an idea of the pricing.

My string breakage problems stemmed from my aggressive palm muting. I pressed the strings down in such a way that they "catch" the sharp edges of the saddles that the strings are not meant to go through and the wound coils of the vibrating strings were cut after being rubbed against the sharp edge. The record was 3 wound G strings (on strat saddles) in a 45 minute set.

Adjusting your technique might save you a lot of money. 8)
