It's partly due to driver size, it's mainly due to its voicing. Headphones and normal speakers supposedly have a flatter frequency response. You can try replacing the guitar speaker with a hi-fi speaker. It'll be "wtf, no shiok" but LOUDER!
A good part of the amp's tone is from the speakers : desirable 'colouring' of the signal. That's where the "speaker cabinet simulator" comes in.
Partly also due to the headphone amp in the guitar amp. Erm... if you know what I mean. Haha...
