Guitar pickups don't actually have to be that high, in my opinion. Older school players prefer to have the pickups set really low. They don't get very high output sound, but some swear that it gives them sweeter tone.

Other players may go for a more high output approach by raising the pickups to increase the output signal. Similarly, there are players that swear by it's supposed increased punch, but also detractors that feel by doing so, you compromise clarity and tone.

I'm no tech wizard by any means, so I go by feel. Just make sure that your polepieces are not so near the strings that they get pulled down, or you get the sound of the strings touching the polepieces, cos that would mean that the magnets are interfering with the vibration of the strings.

At the end of the day, it's all down to personal preference, just like how some people prefer single coils to humbuckers, or active to passive.
