split coils

ok the thing here is that, i gt a humbucker which can be split coil, but my guitar is with juz 1 vol. & 1 tone pot. can it be split coil?? cos when i brought the pu to get wired, the guy say it cant be done.any advice on hw this could be done?? appreciate all infors. thnx

Just a 4-wire conductor humbucker. In a strat style guitar it's doable with no additional parts.

If you doing it on a Les Paul type of guitar with 2 hums you'll also need a switch of some kind like a push-pull pot to "switch on" the split. It might get more complicated if you want to split both humbuckers and have them hum cancelling when they are both selected while split.

1) pu must be 4 conductors (4 wires)
2) can add toggle or change to coil tap pot

something like that....

who did you bring to and why it cannot be done?

well yah my pu has 4 wires, don think its nice to name the shop name here, but when i bought my guitar n the pu over n told him that it can be split coil, but after looking through my guitar he say it cant be done. like theres no way for routing the wires or s.ting cos he took off my pick guard and its solid underneath n he say theres no place....haha dont gt wat he means..

anyway, any idea hw much woud it cost( teh coil tap thingy) n where can i gt it done?? thnx

Hrm, sounds like the tech guy might be saying there's not enough room to fit the pickup into the guitar without routing/cutting a bigger hole. What sort of guitar have you got?

emn..nt so sure what he means, but he had wired the pickup in my guitar, n it fits nicely haha.btw its an epi lp jr  mi, still hoping to gt it split. any idea where n roughly how much it cost??

You probably just need to replace the tone pot (or volume if you prefer) with a push pull pot. Pots available from Sim Lim Tower or the usual suspects around Excelsior. Price, you gotta ask them yourself. 8)

Might have something to do with the knowhow of the tech guy. Helps if you search around for a wiring diagram of what you want, and give it to the tech to follow. Like this: http://guitarelectronics.zoovy.com/product/WDUH01103

well, many ways.

1. push pull pot
2. change 3 way to 5 way switch
3. spin and split
4. add a switch

pup must be 4 conductor as well.

gimme some details on ur guitar and pickup, so i can see what's the simplest way to do it.

babelfish: i could never find audio taper pots in SLTower. where do u get them? Linear taper would be quite bad for volume and tone controls IMO.

Ken: Lol, I gave up on finding audio tapers from SL real quick. Ended up with the CTS ones from GC. Best bet will be to ask around guitar shops. Don't have the inclination to order 1 or 2 pots online just to save a few bucks. :) Finding that I don't really like the turning feel/resistance/friction on the CTS and and Dimarzios I've come across. Too much vs too little. Might have to pay inflated prices for Fender brand pots to satisfy idiosyncratic tastes. :? And I wouldn't call linear taper "bad", more of a preference of what kind of volume drop you expect when you roll down the pot.

Ciki: I haven't seen the insides of an Epi Junior. Hopefully they don't come with some weird circuit board pre-molded wiring setup to save money. I'm assuming it's your run of the mill soldered wires and pots.

thanks babel, whats what i thought. coz i spent a couple hours there few months back and couldnt find any.

i normally order in bulk from the US. end of the day its still cheaper than here even after shipping

well, i gt the wiring diagram of the pickup n had shown it to the guy btw, its a Select design by emg pickup. yah i assume its the know how of the guy doing the wiring. anyway thanks for all advice from you guys. :D will go arnd the usual suspects
