I just got this album...Paul Gilbert has really retarded lyrics. but his solos are damn nice. and again i love his tone!

He plays the Lydian/Dorian mode mixed with the Blues scale A LOT.

Or you can try this, play the Blues scale (Minor Penta with flat 3rd) and throw in a lot of passing b7 notes to give that (in this minor key case) Dorian feel.
