Songwriting

About lyrics 1st or music 1st. There seems an endless battle in all articles written by songwriters throughout the world. I don't think there is a right or wrong here, it really depends on the inspiration that comes along. Sometimes, i have a sticky melody of a song in my head, which i then write into a song, adding lyrics thereafter. Sometimes, i may feel like writing some lyrics, and a sticky melody comes after. Well, ok, mostly the sticky melodies come in faster for me...
I think lyrical songs where good meaning lie within are often written lyrics 1st, but catchy song where the melody slams in much are often written music first. In fact, i believe certain songs like "Hotel California" or "Stairway to Heaven" were written lyrics 1st, and many pop songs are written music 1st... Urggg i'm guessing here.. anyway, who cares, as long as you have that good song!!

i get a tad bit confused.

a songwriter is one who writes music. the melody whereas the lyricist writes the lyrics (the words) to a song?

am i right? or did ijust succeed in completely getting all jumbled up again?

hi clicktokill

i think songwriter is a bit general.

composer=music
lyricist=words

:lol:

well,songwriting is actually the real test of a musician..you can play a thousand notes or play one note,but if it doesnt sound well-blended its just crappy..

most people take songwriting for granted..well,that maybe a stereotype..but thats what I realised la..please correct me if i'm wrong

Depends.

Those jazz musicians play covers most of the time. They do have their own tunes but playing covers do not make them less of a musician.

However, songwriting is a different skill set which most of us have to work at...
