Hi there, I'm new to bass. Actually my genre is more towards rock n metal. But to those bass enthusiast, which songs are relevent to start on my improvement of slapping and popping. (pls dont say RHCP, Flea's style is intelligent playing)

Dude, flea is one of the better exponents of slap and pop out there, songs like aeroplane are fantastic for getting you started on slap and pop. However, if you're dead serious about not learning RHCP songs, you could try learning cruise missile by the steve morse band.

However, i rate larue (morse's bassist) as a more technical player than flea, so learning his songs will take a hell lot more time and effort as well as a great deal of patience but it will open up new paths for you to follow. :)

Running in the Family or Love Games by Level 42, possibly carry easier repetitive slap/pop lines by Mark King, who is singing lead while playing. theres also, the song - Lessons in Love - which ups the speed, accuracy. take it slow if u r new.

i do like flea.... but not as fast as him. pls do not take that i hate rhcp... im one of their die hard fans.. its just that i think he's is more advence.. wahaha.... agreed?

i can't even diffrentiate the diff between the slapping and popping sounds in songs unless it's very loud or obvious, like a bass-slappin solo.

Whoa dude, hahaha, wooten is a class of his own man, nice to watch and all, but best you master flea stuff first before attempting wooten. Wooten has mad technique. Or for a simple intro to slap and pop, try stop loving you by toto. Simple slap/pop lines with groove. :)

Yeah, and i agree with visa, slow down RHCP songs if flea's speed is killing you. And besides, i don't really think anyone can learn songs at full speed. They start off slow to get all the notes right and then speed up from there. :)

thanks guys.... its nice for ur comments.. i heard that some basses are not for slapping and popping?? is that true, or is it some made up stories by ppl who doesnt know much bout basses....?

All basses should be slappable, just a matter of whether your ears like the tone it produces. Like some people say that you don't slap and pop on a precision bass cuz it just sounds funny, but i've heard some awesome slap/pop tones coming from a precision bass. So its all a matter of taste. :)

obviously i did not believe em...... btw, im using a cheap bass.... a TGM.. sounds ok, although i hate the amp.. cuz there is some kind of a buzzing sound....

The buzzing may not be due to the amp. Quite a lot of the time, it's due to the pickups.

With the exception of my EMG-loaded Frankenstein, the other two of my Jazz Basses hum. It's due to the inherent nature of true single coil pickups.

What kind of pickups does your bass have?

I'm guessing you're referring to a P/J setup, which is essentially a Single coil in the bridge and an "S" shaped split coil pickup in the middle position.

If that's the case, then they're still more or less single coil pickups, since there's a J pickup in the bridge. Shouldn't be a problem. Could be due to the fact that you're playing in your room or something?

Rooms are smaller and more cluttered with electronic equipment, therefore contributing to hum.
