hey guys wad do you think is the most impt factor in a song ... is it the music or the lyrics ... i personally feel most songs make it or break it depending on mainly how catchy the music is and lyrics is added to give direction to the song or give a meaning

and i also want to know .... bands in soft ... do you guys compose the music than write lyrics or vice versa ...

Cheers!!

i guess it is the lyrics, music & how catchy.... everything counts. but maybe "catchy" is slightly more impt then the rest. Coz after all ppl will onli start listening to the song onli if the it's catchy.... No point hving gd lyrics and the songs sounds bad....

agree.
as some instrumental song have purely without lyrics, & we still like it.

music.

it's hard to tell people not to write poems into songs - yes it works - but provided you're good enough to come out with a fitting structure!

personally it's melody for me first - don't even want to get to music there. i avoid playing guitar chords and working that way... get the melody, sing something random and work from there. The song usually becomes alive and builds on its own from that single line of lyric.

a combination of both but I guess the music itself is more important. With the lyrics I just hate repetitions.

i'd say music...
atleast half of song listeners listen to the song only coz of its music.
its catchy. they sing along to "get involved" with the song.
you know, some people play their instruments along with the song, these people sing.
they might not even understand the lyrics, but as long as they can sing along, they're happy.
one good example to show that lyrics do not matter is MOI LOLLITA.. XD
do i know the meaning of the lyrics? NO. do i like the song. hell yeah. :D
(and btw, its the song thats nice. alizee is nice too, but putting her aside, the song great)

The music cos most of the time u cant hear the lyrics properly unless u listen to it carefully. And there are many people who listen to J-pop/j-rock songs without understanding a single word.

i'll prefer lyrics than music...

lyrics will form the impression of the song from what i think...so what if u have a very good instrumental intro but the first line of the lyrics starts off bad?if lyrics starts off bad, the whole song is screwed. If the lyrics is too elaborated, it also screws up the song. And if the whole song is nice but when u end with wrong lyrics, all effort would come to waste. So in my opinion, lyrics writing is definetely harder than melody writing..actually many of u think that lyrics writing is a simple task..but writing GOOD lyrics is not easy..the structure must be there. I know of many bands with tuneful rhythms..but their lyrics are too stupid. in the end they never succeed. there goes to show how lyrics are important. :)

Depends on the genre.

For rock/metal/classical/jazz, I would prefer music.

For folk, I would prefer lyrics

hmm my opinions are definetely different from yours...haha

for punk rock/pop rock i prefer lyrics

for metal i prefer the music..

Both, if the song has lyrics that is.

yea its true.if the lyrics cant be heard its the music.and if u can understand the lyrics then the music compliments it.so its both.but i would prefer better lyrics.its very very important.

melody and the performance (instruments and vocals (if any) ) in a song is not a song without melody. Melody can exist as music alone but lyrics can't. Words without music are just poetry or monologues.

sometimes we like listening to music which the language we do not understand. We can still feel the song without understanding the lyrics. For example, there are some J-rock music I like, but I don't know what they are singing about.

to those people who said lyrics, Beethoven will kick your ass.

AHAHAHAHAH. :D .but it depends on wat kinda music laaaa.his kind of music if u have lyrics it'll sound so wierd.so thats why.

Music. You can never achieved a good track without good music.
On the other hand, good music can still be achieved with crap lyrics.

Should the lyrics of MOP be swapped with the alphabets; a, b, c, d.. I reckon I will still love that track.

definitely the music.... the overall feel....

lyrics are secondary, your grasp of the language plays a part.

music works with your soul, u feel them.

at least for me lah....... most of the time anyway..

wel.... for me, some songs the melody, some songs the lyrics..... you guys have to admit, sometimes, we like the song cause the lyrics have some special meaning..... and sometimes we just listen to it cause the music is good..... so i guess it differs from song to song..... some of the 'meaningful lyrics' songs have boring melaodies or music...... and some of the 'nice melody and music' songs have crap lyrics....

Haha, but if the song has ridiculous lyrics and good music... you're most likely to be turned off anyway. But I don't mean Zappa. Zappa pwnz.
