anyone watching this drama serial "son of pulau tekong", currently showing on mediacorp channel 8 thursdays 2am to 4am in the morning? it's a rerun, it was originally aired on SBC channel 8 in 1985.

i'm mentioning this not only because it's a great drama serial, but i noticed a very interesting music related recurring theme in this drama: 1 of the main characters (played by huang wenyong) is a guitarist who plays guitar as a hobby, and from time to time over the episodes you get to see him and other actors play guitar and sing 80s mandarin folk songs (from the popular xinyao movement). the xinyao movement was very popular in the 80s, alot of great songs and songwriters, but sadly we don't get to hear songs like this alot anymore nowadays. through this drama serial, i got to listen to some long forgotten xinyao songs.

the drama serial is about the story of civilian residents of pulau tekong kampung in the 1980s, who moved to stay in mainland singapore because pulau tekong was to be converted into a military island.

so any fans of this drama serial and the xinyao movement?

and i'm curious anyone here used to stay in pulau tekong kampung as a civilian resident?

Unfortunately for some, like myself, we became permanent residents there for 3/4 of our NS lives. Good times, Whiskey Hoo-Ah!

if you put aside the NS aspect, pulau tekong is really a beautiful place. starry starry nights, beautiful beaches, rare wildlife (rare in mainland singapore anyway).. etc etc..

heh, that show rocksss! I watched it as a kid back during the original run on sbc 8.

the theme song almost made me kum tong lau bak sai when i heard it again last week while watching it on tv.

the guitar techer who was teching guitar at the cc when the other 2 characters visited him in one of the episode is xu nansheng, a well know xin yao composer, singer from the early days. He was part of the trio, "straw" trio back then. Within the trio, one was billy koh, the other sunkist Huang if not wrong, both who went on to form ocean butterfly, where most of the current famous singer from our shore(steph sun, jj lim, ah du etc) came from

the guitar teacher in the show used to be a host on the channel 8 morning news show "zao an ni hao" right???? he still looks young, he doesn't seem to have aged!

the drama serial is great.. nice and interesting to see singapore's 80s landscape.. full of nostalgia.. and i like the theme song too (the ending theme). in 1 of the episodes, huang wenyong was playing the ending theme song on his acoustic guitar, the acoustic version's great!

yeah, some of the real street scene really brought back memories for me.

i love watching those re runs at night for these kinda shows. So far, i think this tekong show is one of the oldest they have shown in late nights.

hehe, i wish they could show xiao fei yu(where wang yu qing and chen bifeng still looking young) and awakening(first debut for michelle chia as kid actress in there)

say yeah to youtube!

chen bifeng is the ahlian girl in the "son of pulau tekong" drama right? i remember she acted in another show "bian yuan shao nian" as an ahlian too, lee nanxing was in that show also.

the most memorable wang yuqing role for me has got to be his role in "mi li ye".

i look forward to watching the rerun of "fei yue yin he", the ET show. heh.

mwahaha, yeah, fei yue yin he would make a great comedy in present days context! The storyline, props and that dumb finger sign, before gangsta hand sign was norm!

mi li ye! It was repeated quite sometime back, late night as well. My favourite story from it was the old women with baby kena knocked down and came back to haunt one. That one, sibey power, when i watched it back then.

chen bifeng came back to screen sometime back, hosting a show if i remember correctly. She has aged, but still looking good in general. Heh wang yuqing still going strong siah, in the current 9o'clk show as master yao.

Dao de er zi, nostalgic. I even bought two sets of xin yao sbc/tcs cds of past tv drama theme songs, esp like wen rou de ye, wu xie ge tai, nostalgic. A pity there're too few photos. Hardly anyone talks about xinyao now.
