haha yup!
but i still see a lot of ppl are clueless about genres and their structure or elements.
like can you define a 20th century avant garde vs experimental music?
haha
=D
well basically classical. theres so much to classical, and it is often misunderstood. But we shall not go to that.
basically, what makes a new genre, or how does a new "kind" of music form is basically by the way people think and how does society evolve. In the 20th century, there were some who felt that they should break away from tonality, hence inventing the 12-tone scale system. Where every note has equal emphasis. This is not some random sh*T where anything goes, alot of thought and systems were created to generate musical materials. Even in randomness, there are paramters which are controlled. Basically, it became very mathematical.
As exposed to "EXperimental music" of today. I think today's experimental music is more based on approaches and ideas. Interaction with whats going on.And more "Anything goes... this sounds kinda cool... with this.. and that..." especially with the range of technologies that we are able to access. Just imagine in a DAW, how much SH8t loads u can do with it. Apply endless effects to make really cool sounding stuff! Just imagine! How the F*** they do all those in the past? they had to stick with the conventional instruments yet remain unconventional! That's where they mastered the different aspects of music such as harmony etc. which i think much of modern music totally lacks (which is not a bad thing.. things change and evolve).
And under "CLASSICAL", take a look at the romantic era. it was a period where alot of things were revolutionizing, for example, the the industrial revolution, etc etc. People wanted freedom etc, so composers expressed their thoughts in music, it become more expressive more dynamic etc etc. compared to the past, where they made music purely for music, they called it absolute music. Rules had to be followed in order to achieve the "perfect sound", or so they thought. not until 2009, when modern-music totally thrashed their beliefs.
And don't forget, we are born in modern society with all sorts of music going on, our ears cant really distinguish what is what, thats why everyone nowadays only say "sound good can liao", without understanding why it even sounds good etc. ANd lets not forget, we are now globally connected. If there wasn't internet , or CDs or wadso ever, if HIP HOP was something that could only be heard live, its chance of influencing asian music would be much less greater than now.
Basically more or less, songs, like be it pop, rock, jazz etc. they all follow similar structures like verse, chorusus, maybe a bridge, maybe an interlude etc. But the way it is differnt is the choice of sound (instrumentation and arrangement) and way of playing, rhythmn etc.
AH i shall stop here , its becoming like a super wall of text +9999 dmg.
Sorry for the long post, just sharing my thoughts on this issue
