solo cut thru with good eq

I have very good luck with the M.I Audio blues boy deluxe, for that application. I used to use the ge-7 also, had the same probem . Canned it because it sounded good only for certain songs.

The Blues boy has a 4 band eq and Gain and volume. It can do a great cleanish boost, as with a good saturated and also can do a really good overdrive. The 4 band eq makes it extremely versatile to work with.

the mxr 6 band is a good eq, has served me so far with the rigours of gigs and jams so far. just that it lacks a level control, but its pretty quiet when boosting.

A tip would be how to use your booster in a signal chain, try putting it after your distortions to get a more pronounced overall volume boost. It helps you cut thru the mix without too much excessive boosting (using a boost before your distortion adds more gain and saturation, but not much volume unless you'r using a super weak/mild type OD, tubescreamer-esque types)

Do you want more gain and more volume?

Or do you want more volume and cut?

For the first, then EQ before Drives.

For the second, after the drives.

For your issues with feedback and all, maybe you need to examine you use of the EQ. Maybe you're overboosting. Try the tips Ized and Shreds gave. Then look into another EQ.
