i love my old strings, they are at least 1 and half years old, I clean and oil them after i play and they have this really non-bright sound i really love.

so anyways, I just changed my strings and guess what, I love the new bright sound!!!

I plan to change strings this once and never change them again, to get back the old non-bright sound that I like.... but damn, i'm loving the new bright twangy sound! it seems I'm going to change strings more often now!

anyways how often you change your strings?

I wanted to try elixir strings but decided not to since i don't intend to change my strings and their coating will break off after a while, which will force me to change strings.

i'm on Daddarios XLs now.

it's not impossible bro. i've seen a bassist snap his e string a few minutes into the intro.
hahaha damn funny man. the frontman was introducing his band then the basist string snapped. on stage. haha

luckily he had a back-up strngs

ah...that's makes more sense then.

back to the topic. I change my strings every 6 months or so coz I don't play that often nowadays.

when I was gigging regularly, it was between 1 to 3 months.

personally didn't like XLs. Sounded too bright for my taste.

yeah they are pretty bright.... at first I thought i don't like bright, coz i really like the sound of my old strings.

but after changing them and they sound bright and different, it sounds good too! :) now I can't decide whether i like non-bright or bright! hahaha :)

it a trial and error process. i tried a number of brands before I settled on DRs. Been using them for the last 6-7 years.

recently have been intrigued by the Sadowsky strings though. thinking of ordering in some Sadowsky Blue or Black labels to try with my Sadowsky.

Guess the process never ends...

if u don't like XLs, you would dislike the PRISMS even more. but i think prisms are good value, they have a certain kind of tone that might suit people who are obsessed about brightness

i used elixirs before and i never changed them even after they started flaking. that's because the flaking of coated strings is often cosmetic. it still felt and sounded great. the same set of stock exilirs stayed on the bass till the day i sold it. that was like a year.

i recently changed the stock strings on my fender bass. since it was stock i would have assumed it was uncoated. but it felt good. i recently changed the strings after 6 months (largely due to gauge preference) to DR extra-life. the dr's are not as smooth as the elixirs.

i also use stringlife, which costs a freaking 20 bucks. the funny thing is, it made the elixirs and the stock fender strings feel smoother, but it didnt have much effect on the DR's. it makes the string brighter upon application, but not back to 100% life force though.

i also find that a set of strings will not change the tonal characteristics of a bass much. after a few weeks, it's the same shit. it would be funny if you changed the strings of your mahogany fretless bass every month

what i wouldn't give for a mahogany fretless bass :)

I'm oiling my strings from day 1 onwards! :) let's see what's the results I'll report the status 6 months down the road! :)

lol i wouldnt want to risk the string deadening if i don't oil them. esp after spending 20 bucks on lube. i want to believe that it works
