snare recommendations

hey guys - trying to find a good snare now.
looking for something versatile, leaning more towards wood.
i guess i want something responsive and sensitive, something that would sit in well for jazz and still make a pretty mean impression for rock.
help? haha

hmm, wood should be fine. which wood you choose might be a matter of taste. i can think of many snares that would get the job done, but you'd have to like it (at least for the moment) i guess.

boris williams used a dry sounding wood (beech?) but he tuned it low and laid a fat note for recording, it worked for the cure material (rock). someone else might not feel the same though.

metal snares can suit both jazz and rock too, you probably might want to look at darker tones, copper, bronze, hand hammered ones.

if possible, keep listening and trying till u check out something you really like!

cheers

i have a DW 14 x 5.i pretty much use it for anything. the trick i found was the tunnings and how u set the snare wires. i usually tune both heads with the same tension. funny thing is i use the same tunning for funk as i do jazz. pretty damn tight, although for jazz i loosen the snare wires some to give it abit more body.

hears a tip, use gd snare wires. they liven up the snare and give alot of response. gd snare bad wires = okie sounding. gd snare and gd wires = very gd sound. u need of course gd tuning and gd heads as well. just saying cause snare wires are very often neglected.

yup i sure am. i'm on the basic one right now, i really wanna try the other models. like the ones with more strands

hmm, u shld like the snare and can see urself playing the repertoire u intend to focus on for the next year or so.

if u still don't have a strong opinion on whether the snare suits your taste, maybe u can hold off buying an expensive snare for now. get by without or just get a cheaper one and take ur time to try it out first.

regards
