hey dudes. i have a question. you all kep talking about the super high end stuff. you know the pearl picolo? hpow do you all find it.. its quite cheap right. i wan a new snare but i'm running on a tight budget. what you think?

Yep, Pearl has a very good range of piccolos and they are quality products wif a very good pricing point, and one of those tat u shld definitely try is the 14x3.5 free-floating snare. Its not some gimmicky marketing techno-babble but yes, by making the shell independent of the hardware does promote great resonance and thus those great musically-sounding sound generated from the snare. Hell, u could even change the shell if u wan to. Do consider tis baby...

The Pearl Free-Floating Snares ROCK!! Regardless of size!

But the Replacement shells are hard to come by and its not so cheap either.

But its cool to have brass, maple, steel or aluminium shell at your disposal depending on the situation.

erm any of you guys have?

hey guys any of you fellow softies have the pearl s-1330b picolo snare? can give me your reviews on it? online reviews on musiciansfriends and music123 all give good reviews on it.

sweelee ah.. i saw it at the sale. dont know if its still there. i think it might, the snares didnt sell that well. or either that try the one in sims drive.

bliss i see you have many sig's eh. could you give me a review. is it a peng or tic sound. is it washy? how washy? is the feel good? is the bell bright? is the sound precise? i tried the cymbal sounds on cymbalsonly.com but i must say that personal experience is much better.

Hmm, seems like this snare thread is startin to deviate a lil to cymbalism. Oh well, ok where do I start, let's see. Firstly, there's so many range of cymbals in the Signature series and each of them has their own sounds, so i will roughly state the characteristics of the series in general. For me, the Signature is a very musical cymbal. The reason i've been into them and Paiste in particular is due to the shimmer and glassiness of their cymbals. As u might noe, Paiste cymbals are generally brighter and glassier than Zildjians or Sabians. My ride has one of the precise, cutting and glassy, pingy bells i've heard. If u wan a washy ride, can try go for the mellow ride. And Signature cymbals and splashes are wat made me go nuts over this series. They are jus plain mellifluous, full, versatile, musically-inclined and they cover those accented playings really well cos the mixture of low, mid and high frequencies are excellent, and the feel is jus damn good makin every crash kinda like an eclectic mix of purely orgasmic musical coloration tat responses everytime u wan it to. :P But after reading on the kinda cymbals u were lookin for, i dun tink u mite wana go wif the Sigs cos u'd be better off wif the Trads if ur after those darker, washier, vintage sounding cymbals. It seems like im really biased and tend to lean lots on Paiste but its jus my preferences guys and my humble 2-cents to help Josh make a really wise decision. Hope tis helps.

I'm craving for that classic Mitch Mitchell snare sound. The sound of a

Ludwig Superphonic 400 (if i remember the model no. correctly!).

Listen to the snare sound on Jimi Hendrix's Axis Bold As Love and Electric

Ladyland albums for reference. Old school but still completely valid sound!

The good ol' Ludwig Supraphonic 400. So-called the most recorded drum in history. Great stuff, and together wif black beauties, somehow made Ludwig still mighty now.

If the rumours are true, I would love to get my hands on Josh Freese's custom snare, which is made of melted cymbals. :o I wonder how it would sound!

Sean, Aside from using DW, Freese is also using the Paiste Spirit of 2002 Bronze Snare crafted by John Ocheltree, the one tat u mentioned, and they are not rumors. In fact, they are one of the most critically-acclaimed snares ever. Its made from melted Paiste 2002 series cymbals, which uses B8 alloys. There were 2 models crafted by Ocheltree, the other one being Paiste Signature Bronze snare which was made from melted Paiste patented Signature bronze, a B15 alloy which is used to create the Signature, Traditional and the now-defunct Sound Formula series cymbals. Heard both of them and they really made me warm and fuzzy inside. Been looking for tis snares to add to my collection but to no luck and furthermore, they are of a limited edition and the last one to appear on Ebay sold for US$2k.

hey. i was wondering actually how to go about choosing snare drums? cymabls you can hear the sound online. why dun we start by getting everyone to like try to record their snare sounds? maybe just a simple single stroke?

Wateva it is, the best way is to try everything hands-on personally. Comments on piccolo? Its either u wan tat kinda fast, high-pitch sound wif crack or u dun. So if u love a 'poppy' sound wif lotsa crack like me, piccolo is a good choice and it serve well as a primary snare and also as an auxiliary. Used to own a Tama Bronze piccolo. A well-made and great sounding snare, pearl's got a good line of piccolos too. Hmm, talkin abt reviews, am tinkin of coming up wif reviews of my snares and those tat i had the chance gettin intimate wif...
