Was wondering, there's a thread on cymbals but couldnt find any on snare drums discussion in general and its like the heart and soul of our set-up. So hope to start this thread, wantin to know wat kinda snare u guys used, loved and maybe tinkin of purchasing in the near future, post pics of ur own snares or interesting ones tat u mite stumble upon etc etc. Tis way, tis thread can also act as a resource for anyone from newbies who are looking to purchase their first snares to those who are looking to add another to their set-up or upgrade. Thx for the time guys...

haha i use whatever comes with the set dudel. right now i have a steel tama snare. wanted to get the dave weckl one but i guess its not worth it.

My main snare is:

snaresp1.jpg

A Pearl MSX snare 14' x 5" (Masters Retrospec).

I tuned it purdy tight at Drumdial reading of 90 for the Evans Power Dot Reverse Center batter head and 85 for Remo Ambassador Resonant with an additional O' ring to minimize the overtones.

Its pretty versatile with a warm tone and lots of crack if needed.

I'm experimenting with various model of batter and reso to try and get multi-pallette of sound depending on the songs that are going to be played.

Batter and reso is a significant factor to a snare sound and so does the tuning.

Happy drumming!!! :D

Tats cool. Thx Shred for the first blood on tis thread and hoping others folo suit soon. And wat a grand opening it was, tat's sure one pretty snare. Love tat swirling pearley finish. Wat's the finished called?

The finish is called "Royal Gold". I've been eyeing it for quite a while when I saw it the first time at SL Sims Drive. Definitely a bit scared when I saw the price tag. Quite affordable though.

The main factor that attracted me to this beauty other than the cosmetic was the sound.

The 6mm maple plies does a good job of producing warm tones with loud cracks when needed.

Even though its not that comparable with other high end snares, it does it job well and I'm contented with it.

Next Snare purchase:

Pearl Vinnie Paul Signature snare 14" x 8".. Pure Madness!

Its been awhile since ive been down to MFO SL at Sims Dr. Would love to noe wat new stuff they got. Mind sharing how much u got it for? Hey, i tried tat Vinnie Paul Sig and its blardy wicked man. Man, it brings ringing to ur ears like never b4. Kinda slow, so guess I share wat i jus got today and keep the ball rolling and hope to keep it alive:

^^^^ Dat snare is a DW Neil Peart Signature Series!!! 8O 8O

Lovely!! Classy!!

How does it sound?

Yea bro, its the Neil Peart/Rush 30th Anniversary DW Edge snare. Sounds like how an Edge is supposed to be, unique, cos of the combination of all-maple mid-shell wif 2 heavy gauge brass rings making up top and bottom section of the shell. And cos of tis, god, it weighs a tonne. Gives u the warmth of wood with the crack and attack of brass. A loud snare wif unique sound characteristics. At times, it growls when required to but given the opposite treatment, it will mellow down and take the other direction, a versatile snare indeed. One of the best snare besides DW Craviotto/Solid Shell for ghost notes playing in my humble opinion...

I use a Pearl Omar Hakim snare bought from a fellow Softie. Love it. I like the sensitivity and bright tone of the snare :D

Mel80: I use an Omar Hakim too! Love it!

Recently bought a 14 X5.5 yamaha maple custom snare (natural finish) off ebay. Should be coming in this week... Hope it's not disappointing. It's kinda like my consolation after convincing this other drummer in church (think i was mad) to get the Dennis Chambers model during the sale, which I initially wanted.

Bliss: The snare looks cool. But yea, wish I could hear how it sounds like. I almost wanted to go for the black panther with the gold lugs.

Hey Stroke, no worries man, the Maple Custom is a nice snare, for me tat is. Hope it does the same to u and if possible, try to post some pics ya?

The Dennis Chamber snare is a KILLER!!!

Tune it tight or tune it "semi-tight", the TONE is DAYUMM!!!

With a pair of throw-off mechanism, that snare is one of the most versatile snare ever produced.

The variety of sound emitted with each throw-off position is amazing.

Another good snare to look out for.

add on to what shred said its a very good snare cause i have 1 also i used it at the tapestry gig recently and no miking was needed cause it could cut tru as well very clearly.......by the way i have an omar hakim snare too thats a killer snare and the crack is soooo sooooo yummy
i will try to get some pic out as soon i can

peace

Wow, seems like Omar Hakim snare is da bomb. Yea pics man, tis thread is sorely lacking in pics of those babies. While waitin for ur pics, here's another one from me, my good ol' Craviotto. One of the best solid shell snare ever, in fact, one of the best snares ever..

Here's a pic of my OH snare.... Scrumdilyumcious crack! Still waiting in eager anticipation for the yamaha!

Bliss: How many snares have u got so far and what do you think of the pearl masters and 1960s slingerland artist series?

PICT0619.jpg

bliss knows what he wants and most of the stuff he bought has great re-sale value, not to mentioned good-sounding too!!

Keep the faith Bliss!!

Stroke: The wood grain finish on the OH got class man. Bro, the Pearl Masters 4-ply maple snare are great. For more volume go for the 6-ply version but u can't go wrong wif the 4-ply one. Great resonant due to the thin plys, its a very musical and versatile snare. Got a hell of a time trying on Pearl, OCDP, Rocket etc snares when i was in a music store in Shibuya. Holy hell, one whole level dedicated to drums and their collection of snares is madness. As for Slingerland, i dun have much chance to lay hands on, so i cant comment on tat. But if u wan a vintage sounding snare, Gretsch is a good choice and of cos, the Black Beauty of old is always up there.

Bliss: Thanks for the insight! Shall keep it in mind... 8)

Ah Pek: I rem you mentioning abt owning some vintage drums right? Think it was a 1970s gretsch snare or something?

Anymore snare shots coming?
