I'd avoid the hot rails. I used to have it on my strat and sold it. It's only good for heavy distortion kind of playing. The tone is very muddy / mushy and boomy. It's very high output, to the point of distorting, i.e. perfect for metal. The 'bite' of a single coil pickup is totally lost.

There are many other alternatives like the JBjr or little 59 which are far better.

you'd avoid the Hot Rails because you wish for single coil voicings. for those who aren't interested in this, if distortion is your fodder, the Hot Rails is it.

'better' is relative to needs.
