Title: Singapore ranked second globally for nightlife and dining
By: Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia

Singapore has emerged second for nightlife and dining in the second annual Country Brand Index 2006.

Singapore was unranked in the previous survey but it now beats countries such as the United States, UK and Thailand.

Singapore also ranked second in the world for shopping, while the United States took the top spot for retail.

The Country Brand Index shows Singapore continues to retain its attractiveness as a country for conducting businesses and conferences, rising six notches from last year to being the third most preferred convention destination.

Singapore also made the top 10 list for being an ideal country to do business in.

The Country Brand Index is developed by FutureBrand, a global brand consultancy, in conjunction with the public relations firm Weber Shandwick's Global Travel Practice.

Global Travel Practice is a global study of more than 1,500 international travellers, travel industry experts and hospitality professionals and it examines how countries can be branded and ranked according to key criteria.

The Country Brand Index was released at the World Travel Market in London.

Singapore has made it within the list of top 10 country brands in nine of the 20 categories. - CNA /dt

My feel of it?

Since when Singapore has picked up on the clubbing scene? Just by having MOS stomping into Singapore? Just by Zouk renovating their premises? Is 1500 people all it takes to rank a country?

To what I know of, Singapore has yet to produce a single international dance music producer that rings loud enough and as good as Peter Rauhofer, or Carl Cox, or Dimitri from Paris, if not better.

I do not know what is the basis of this survey done, and what sort of questions were asked in this survey. Dining has picked up alot from the good old days, but IF dining is the pushing factor behind this ranking, how much credibility when it comes to the term "nightlife".

In the eyes of many clubbers and DJs, it is common knowledge that Singapore is struggling to keep up with nightlife. Operation hours, licenses, the manitude of "freedom" in clubs like bar top dancing, etc. We don't have very much choices except for the usual few. Music sense is also much wider, with a full range unlike the clubbing scene in Singapore, primarily dominated by Hip Hop and RnB. (I am not saying Hip Hop and RnB is lousy, I am just saying there is a lack of other music too.)

That's only my personal view ...

Cheerz,

DD

low crime rate, can walk at 2 or 3 o clock in the morning without being robbed or knock from behind [unless you owe ah long money, 0$p$]...
i dunno why, when i come to singapore,i always sleep like damn late, untill 2-4am....but when i go back to indo,i sleep damn early, hahaha, some of my friends experience the same thing...
maybe coz its easy to get transport here...and the temptation of eating roti prata is always there, hahaha

Indon have 24 hours clubs ... first time in my life I walk out of a club at 9am in the morning and see the sun.   Although drugs and illegal activities are very commonly seen.

This ain't quite sooo... my good friend four weeks back was walking near MICA and the civil defence museam on a tuesday morning, 3am, and was jumped by three guys from behind with a whack to the side of the head. Blind drunk, he fought back, the took his eye glasses and briefcase full of nothing but papers. When I went with the police to look for his glasses, all we found was a tooth, presumable from one of the attackers.

This shit happens here, the nation builder only reports it if someone dies.

but it ain't as bad as Bangkok where i almost had my thumb chopped off with a machetti simply coz that assh*le Bush invaded Iraq!

Ha ha ha...Bangkok is heaven bro......Anyway i think Singapore is not a party town at all with so mnay rules....

I think the trick to understanding the result is in the fact that they surveyed countries, not cities.

London, NY, Paris etc are cities not entire countries. As a small country Singapore has a fairly diversified range of nitelife and dining options but as a city can it compete with NY or London?...don't think so.

I think you got it right ... even a single city is already 10 times more vibrant than Singapore a country as a whole ... need we say more about competing against the entire country elsewhere?

hahahahaha 2nd in the whole world for its nightlife and dining. What a joke! We are the only country that bans the consumption of chewing gum and we are ranked second in night life and entertainment and food?

Next time i also come out with my own statistics lah hor

I'm sorry, but what does the ban of chewing gums has to do with nightlife and dining?

DD

Well to me, the simplest form of entertainment to myself is eating a chewing gum. If it is banned in Singapore, how much more nightlife do we have and by that how can we be ranked 2nd?

be proud of your own country ...especially this country where your ass is save walking down the streets !!

its NOT what the country does for you ...its what you can do for the country !!!

When was the last time you've been to BKK? Only 2 strips in BKK are allowed to close at 2am. The rest have to close at 1am. The after-hours are either drug fueled parties at someone's house or some dingy pub in the middle of nowhere.

After lunch at 2pm, I walked into 7-Eleven to grab a Tiger (yes, it's even cheeeper than Singha... by 1 baht!) and there's a new regulation where alcohol is allowed to be sold across the counter from 11am to 2pm and 5pm - 12am. Correct me if I'm wrong, bro thailoverboy bro...

That doesn't sound too much of a party town to me anymore.

But that said, there are a lotch of HOTT women in BKK! Woot!

Bro DD bro, beside the entertainment aspect of nightlife, you overlooked the other important factor: service.

The whole thing about going out at night is about the entertainment and service you'd get. So far, I've never met guys complaining about being in a venue with a bunch of women in low-plunging V-line outfits and miniskirts. But women who complained about the guys in the club not being cute enough? TONS...

We have 24 hours clubs. Some clubs in Boat Quay close at 9am or 10am. In this aspect, I've read a NYT article where the journalist actually said that 'A night at Zouk beats an entire week at RCA, Bangkok.' I'm a bit skeptical about that though cuz the last time I was there early this year. They actually had an acoustic duo performing in the ladies of one of the clubs!!!

And anyway,

In Sweden, prostituting yourself is legal but visiting a prostitute in illegal.

But they have so many great acts from Sweden. What gives?

So wierd to be dissing the result if you have not been to experience other countries' nightlife. If you have, then post your experience and state why it's better than singapore's. I'd be interested to hear, and visit if there are great places to go :D

If you're only dissing singapore's cos you don't like it much and you imagine it to be so much better overseas, i'd suggest you go overseas and try try first, then come back tell us about it :D imagination can run wild.

Main difference between the clubs here and the clubs I've been to in Australia is the music they play. Here, it's all about popular stuff, anything that's on the radio, they'yy spin it. In Aussie (and other places I imagine), the music choice is much more diverse. House, acid, trance, anything goes and people don't complain. Play anything other then RnB here and you're getting yourself into dipshit.
