The semi finals at Plaza Singaura was superb.
Alas, Sarah ran out of ideas to interact with her audience. She's quite different looking than the flyer leh. She must have not put on her make up.
Unfortunately I only managed to catch the show after Lazius performs. By the way before Lazius performs, any of the semi-finalists plays metal?

Wow! man what a fantastic day...ok la it sucks not to go to the finals....its a competition we all want to win hahaha....but man Singapore has tremendous talent...Wiremesh dude, don't worry so much, everything happens for a reason, and not only will you make it into the semis next year, but you will have practiced so much by then that you will be in the finals!!!! ::

.....hey Marcadrummer.....hahaha so confusing I know...I told the drumfest guy I have a british passport but I was born and raised in france....somehow they said I was from england....haha...well I guess its because I lived there for a while.....It was my first public performance in SSpore so I hope it was ok la....anywyas, Gilbert is fantastic I went to see him perform tonight at The Boiler room in St james...he blew me away AGAIN!!!...what a humble guy....for sure will be some cool action during the finals!!...congrats to both Garry a fantastic performer and Gilbert if they are readiong this thread

Hey Lazius u did very well also, I manage to take some snap shots I'll try to post the link here later if I have time to download and upload it.
Yeah Gilbert is the highlight of the show hahaha he's not just good in drumming he can also be a stand up comedian !!! he's set is very original.
Technicality and showmanship won for Gilbert. Gary is also great cant' wait to see the finals !!!

I seriously thought that Gary was the best in the open cat.
Gilbert was playing the same things over and over again, albeit with gimmicky stuff like that drum machine thingy and blindfolds. Good entertainment value I guess.
But Gary!!! He was REEEEAAAL tight with the piece with his friend and his solo was interesting.

remember guys i was telling you at the last meetup about a certain gary who blew me away with his playing 10 years ago, and was given the nickname 'alien' by my drum teacher... its the same fellow .... man, he was already destruction then \m/

You mean Gary the Monster...Hahahahaha ! wasted lah I have to go for my drum lessons so I left at 3.30pm and came back to Plaza at 5.15pm by then the open-cat finish liao but I did see the junior and under 21 cat ----- wow they are very good man and I love the event so much I had a great time there....wah singapore got many many good drummers.....
I took some photos but I do not have photos from 3.30 till 5.15pm drummers.....and I left Plaza Singapura with some drummers here at Soft ...at 11pm in the night we chat alot...
And...gosh my favourite girl Sarah is there, manage to take a picture with her but blurr lah (Jimmyplaydrums I am gonna kill you)...but Bros I didn't get to have a date with her lah - - angry man......Rahima Rahim(Singapoe Idol) she call and I said I'm there at drumfest and she came also to see Boon and myself took a picture with her..
PS: - Anybody took pictures - post it up here please for all to see (or start a new Thread - Pics of Semi-Finals).....

Yup I do agree that technically Gary is the best in the open cat, but that alone is not enough. I watch the 21 and other cat and there are lots of great drummers who are technically gifted but guess who won? the one who mixed his talent with showmanship. Drumming is also an entertainment thing, we drummers know that is a good drumming and which is not. Last Saturday's semis, there are mix audience and I heard someone says "how do they judge these drummers? for me its just the same sound" these are the common people who only judge by what they see and hear that's why Gilbert won the "People's choice" award thing and also went to the finals because he's entertaining to watch and technically gifted also. So for me it's not just pure talent, you need to be creative and be different with others.

yeah zildjohn, i totally agree man.... despite knowing how good gary is, from what i've heard about gilbert i know the winner is definitely not yet a foregone conclusion!!

I believe that the bad sound was what caused the "everyone sounds the same" syndrome. Any note below FFF went unheard, toms had little distinction in tone... hence everyone was just blowing the same single and doubles chop-socky. All the grooves were the loudest grooves I've ever heard. Everyone kept playing the 2nd line groove and the songo and weird funk. Luckily gary brought his own toms.
At some point I noticed that the drummers were forced to use the cymbals gratuitously to catch the audience's attention... which was always waning. One media rep I know left halfway coz she was very bored. I guess that's why the crowd went nuts when gilbert did all his entertainment stuff.

Yeah, I encourages all to join next years (if there is) like I do this year cause we need more ppl not just playing "the 2nd line groove and the songo and weird funk"
No offense or anything to start a flame thread just my 2 cents worth opinion. Cause its just a great experience, nothing else. Playing live in front of not just audience but drummers esp the judges can be breathe taking...
