Since I've been looking for all-in-one recording equipment..

and in particular mobile handheld recorders, allow me to put out my own research:

Micro-BR - vernplum has one, as well as an OM using it. From what I read, good for one takes, practice, direct-in. 229USD.

Edirol R-09 - one of the best field recorders out there. Expensive. 399USD.

Zoom H4 - Good for live recording. Bad/complex controls. Somewhat buggy (but I think if you're one to do research this isn't an issue) 299USD.

Zoom H2 - Introduced at NAMM 07. Click here. 199USD?

I will entertain related questions other than local price and where to get the equipment. For those about to complain, there's enough information everywhere for you to start learning how to use Google. If you've googled and found the information, give yourself a pat on the back! :)

thor666, you just wanna record stereo track?

would a mp3 or minidisc recorder just be as useful?

My MD spoilt. And it's so annoying to get MD stuff now that it's being phased out. :| I'm thinking of miking my speaker cabinet. Preferably without the computer.

Sorry, they really look cool!! But if i have to spend that much (unless i am rich man and money means nothing to me!!), i would rather record my ideas on my handphone and go back to record properly on my pc. And it's really cumbersome to bring extra stuff like that on my pockets...

Ha ha. Old post redugg. I have a mp3 player with a recording function now, so maybe I'll use that to record when I get the time to set my stuff up.

I was also thinkin abt getting a portable digital recorder. My main intention is just to record live during jamming. The recorders u mention seems to be too expensive for the purpose. I wonder how the quality like? Anyone tried before?
I tried using my creative zen micro to record but quality is terrible, cant make out wat is playing.

Any recommendation any particular mp3 player or any digital recorder with decent recording quality?

look for the older iriver h3XX series. great for recording, they have 1/8" line and mic inputs, as well as a semi decent internal mic (mono though).

it records straight to mp3 at 44.1khz and a choice of bitrate up to 192kbps, levels are easily adjustable and even an "automatic gain compensation" feature (like a compressor of sorts).

the internal mic tends to pick up hard drive spinning noise but its fine for recording quick ideas, i use an external stereo condensor mic with a battery operated preamp, and it works wonders for bootlegging shows and recording rehearsals.

i do wish it could record to WAV sometimes but for the uses stated above a 192kbps mp3 is more than adequate. i believe using the rockbox firmware allows WAV recording, but i've never tried it.

I have the micro br. Its a good piece of gadget for self jamming especially with the drum patterns that you can mix around. Has amp simulator, built in effects, time stretch(playback speed),chromatic tuner, multi track recording, and more(too many to list). Takes max 1gb sd card for storage. So far the cons are a weak reverb effect and not so easy drum pattern arrangement due to its small display (My thumb hurts after awhile coz too many button pressing). Actually thinking to sell this off to fund for recording soundcard. But overall, its a worthy piece of recording device especially if you get it for half price (last swee lee sale). :D :D

The Edirol is available at Sweelee. At a different price - can't remember how much though.

If you want to record jamming sessions, I think probably (in theory) the Zoom H2/H4 or a good MD recorder will do best.

my guitarist recently got the Zoom H4 for about 300+. The onboard stereo mics are very good for recording live. Every instrument is clear, even the kick drum can be heard. Using a sandisk 2gb SD card, no problems using it so far, although only recording in stereo mode.

As usual the most important thing is to adjust the recording levels so there's no distortion and the positioning of the recording device inside the jam studio/ bedroom.

Btw, Zoom comes with adaptor or powered with 4 AA batteries.
