Should I?

I bought this Yamaha 5stringer P and J afew weeks ago, its pretty cool but I could prefer a 5string cause all my favourite players
all uses 4stringers(flea, sheehan etc.) and the slapping sound of it is not really nice.

So Im deciding to trade it with a guy for an OLP stingray which is slightly cheaper....should I?

hell yes you should!!!

btw, where can one acquire an OLP Stingray in our sunny island set in the sea?

Kinda depends lah .. 5-strings open you up to quite a variety of sounds ... but if you want a 4-stringer ... Guitar Workshop at Bras Brasah have some OLP stingrays .. nice ones ...

Davis are the distributors of OLP .. check them out ..

SUPERKICKY: i just realised something .. after playing my warmoth for a while, i realise i'm in love with the jazz bass sound .. goodness, so there's a chance i may not get the 55-02 after all .. HEE HEE ..

alka1987, before you really make a swap, do consider some things:

1) What kind of music do you envision yourself playing most?

2) What kind of sound are you looking for?

3) Can that sound be made using 4 or 5 string basses?

4) If you swap for a 4 string, how sure are you that you won't feel like getting another five string?

5) What you can do on a 4 string, you can do on a 5, but not necessarily the other way round

Just a few things to consider. I made the choice to sell my Yamaha RBX 765A 5 string to get my 4 string Frankenstein Jazz Bass, only to kick myself a few years down the road, when I was exploring top forties and funk.

It's easy to be taken in by impulses, so make sure you think through what you do, because playing bass isn't a cheap thing to do in the long run, what with the phenomenon we know as GAS.

Id play stuff like hard rock, funk rock and some metal...

The players i listen to...Billy Sheehan, Cliff Burton, Flea, Taiji. They all use 4 stringers....I dont think Id have a problem w/o the extra string

Well, if that's the case, then go for it!

It's a little more challenging to have to do without the lower notes for some songs, but that'll challenge you to improve your choice of notes to cover it.

Not that im very rich but if im you, I will not trade in, but will purchase another 4 string.

As you progress you might find tt Yamaha 5 string useful (you will know how to adjust the sound and your playing skills will improve). Of cos if you wanna tradein , it's your choice.
OLP is ok lah.. The Tony Levin 5 string is 650 at davis. That is with 3 band EQ. 4 String I thk is 550. Can check it out at davis loh.

Ben

alka, you shouldn't change your bass just because your favourite players play it. you should buy what you like personally. If you like a 5-string, you should stick with it. i heard yamaha 5-strings are pretty good. :)

wish i could be like u exin. the more i hear my bass sounds, the more i gas for barts. haha..

actually should just stick with your MECs for a while .. =) .. good stuff actually .. barts may not make it sound nicer either .. i feel MEC have their own style and tone range that Barts don't have .. so .. i'll stick with my MECs for a while then see how it goes .. hee hee ..

Nordys are expensive .. but heard they cater more towards those who are looking for a vintage sound .. Lindy Fralin's also .. heard that Fralins thrash all vintage pickups around for that vintage sound .

If you are willing to set aside some money, it's a good idea to get a decent 4 stringer. You never know when you may need a 5 string.

If you aren't ready to set aside too much money, it's okay to stay with a 5 string, since you can also play 4 string stuff with a 5 string. You just have to work a little harder on your muting.
