Should I get a Yamaha Guitar?

Hi one and all, I am a rookie trying to find a guitar, but I am now caught up with a situation where I have to choose one within my budget. I went to Yamaha and saw that their entry level range is about $300-400. Can you guys enlighten me on Yamaha Guitars?

I am considering between the PAC120SJ and the PAC012 for a start in my E-guitar self learning process.

Thanks.

i feel that yamaha guitars are quite good..as in average..
BUT they are way overpriced. with the similar price, u can get a much better guitar, in terms of pickups and wood and whatsoever.

yamaha guitars are presentable, just way overpriced.

Oh thanks for the information. I was actually looking at the Epiphone SG Special at Sweelee's website too. Wanted to go with that already then saw the guitars at Yamaha. So I wanted to check 1st before I make a decision.

Yamaha Warehouse sales is coming anyway, in late Febuary ;)

i would always recommend a lespaul standard.. which only cost slightly more than a SG..
a lespaul allows much lower action..means u can bring down the action of your strings without having fretbuzz..

SG..the feel i dun really like leh..the high end ones are good.but i believe its too expensive for u..

a normal lespaul standard is the most suitable for beginners i feel..
get those silver pickups one ah..closed coil..
dun get those open coil ones.. where pickups are black colour and u can see those silver circles on them.. they are the cheaper and lousier pickups..

i think u can get a lespaul standard at around 500 from sweelee..

its your first guitar right? haha.. first guitars are the most important..cuz they determine whether u are going to continue playing or not.. lousy guitar discourage u from playing further. so good luck with choosing!

you can also refer to the review section to read more about some of the guitars there which fit your budget. my advice here would be, ignore the brand name, get the guitar which you like 8-)

Yamaha guitars are not bad man! Really. When I started I got a Yamaha Pac 112J. It's quite good for practice. You should actually try them. It's not bad. They may not be the best for gigs, but you would have a good guitar for practice.

actually i think yamaha guitars are great for beginners!

the most important thing about the electric guitar is the set up
it can have the best woods and hardware, but when something is 'off', it is off

i would recommend something with a slim neck, floating bridge (maybe hardtail would be more convenient), so that it's easier on your fingers, and changing strings wouldnt be a pain

also, my personal advice is to avoid small prices on big brands (ie, gibson, fender)
why spend that extra $200 just for the namesake, when the money can go into the next guitar purchase when you actually know what you are looking for?

when looking online for reviews, take everything with a pinch of salt
even if others tell you something is better, learn to trust your ears too
i often disagree with what is written on online forums, because things sound 'different' to me

i would always recommend a lespaul standard.. which only cost slightly more than a SG..

care to justify your points?

i have a yamaha aes620, which i can rely upon for anything requiring humbuckers
and have yet to see another guitar which can compete at the same price

hehe i got an acoustic guitar. yamaha brand. i dunno what's the model type.

its 3RD HAND. and still in mint condition. neat. and i've only changed the string s a few times. very reliable. but of course, you gotta take care of it though.

anyway, you're looking for an electric, acoustic or classical guitar?

I am looking for an E-guitar as I already have an acoustic, handmade from Philippines. Giving up guitar as it's very hard to play on an acoustic. I decided to give guitar-ing another try BUT with E-guitar this time round.

I also need advices on Amp. Looking at Crate and Fender Frontman series.

Budget for both items is about 400 to 500.

Scudman,

Check out Cort and Samick too. And as mentioned, the setup of your guitar is very important! It'll definately kill your interest if your guitar's action is too high, intonation off, or tuning not stable etc.

Best to bring along a friend who plays electric guitar to help you out.

Some questions to ask before you decide on the "type of guitar:

1. Pickups
- Humbucker or Single-coils? Or mixture?
- Type of pickup: Active (EMG), high output or low output types.

2. Shape of guitar
- Les Paul (Gibson)
- Stratocaster (Fender)

3. Fixed or floating bridge?
- Tune-o-matics on a Les Paul
- Floyd Rose on an Ibanez RG
- Vintage tremolos on a Fender Stratocaster

There is no best, just pick one that suits the style of music you play and the features that you'll use. Good luck~

As for amps, I would go for Vox AD30VT or AD50VT. Quite good sounding for its price. It also has digital multi effects and amp types - good for electric guitar newbies to explore different kinds of sound. Saves you money on effect pedals until you have more knowledge/experience on what you want.

hmm my guitarist cousin once said that for a beginner, get a good amp. as for the guitar, any guitar is good. i don't know if it works for him cos his first electric guitar was a squier. lol

Yamaha.. okay la. I've got one, EG 112C. Works fine for me as a beginner guitar. Better off getting a good amp before a guitar IMO. I died playing with the Yamaha 15watt practice amp. Sounds like shit sometimes no matter what guitar I use lol.

i own a yamaha too. rgx 420... it not bad for its price. think set up is the most important thing to a guitar

I just went to Sweelee with a friend and he recommended me to start with Ibanez for starters, as it's easier to learn. But he did say that I should try out other guitars and see which one I want though.

I am having more and more options now... Sigh... Yamaha, Epiphone, Les Paul and now Ibanez... However, I am SERIOUSLY not gonna pump in a big budget on my 1st guitar. Therefore, I am looking at something between 300-400 bucks.

Also, should I go for 2nd hand guitar?

Some people ask me which genre I will be playing, I can only say that I want to learn the basic strumming and maybe some picking. Basically just want to learn chords on. once I am more into the whole guitar-ing thing, then I will go for a better guitar. Also by then, I would have know what I really want. Thus, sound is not say very important to me as yet, the more important factor will have to be the ease of playing/learning. I wouldn't want to end up giving up because the guitar is too hard to fret or play.

DILEMMA...........

lol speaking from experience...i suggest you invest in a good guitar as your first..as it would go a long way...dont waste time on a 200-300 sx or some cheapo one..and spend like 100 - 200 more over the years sending it for repair for faulty electronics...loose input jacks and such.....
