i saw this question being asked on Ultimate Guitar before but i wanted to know more opinions from Singaporeans.

so yeah, which is better? do you benefit more from guitar lessons or they are just a waste of money since most of the things can be self taught.

i'm a self taught by the way, considering going for music lessons in the near future

i'm self-taught, and I blow at guitar. go get a teacher and learn some shredding skillz and become famous!

personally, i think that learning from a teacher is better because he can really help you spot bad habits when ur playing the guitar. and bad habits really take a long time to break once manifested.

Its depends on yourself actually..

If you have the passion and talent, it does not matter whether you have a teacher or not....of course having a teacher is always an added advantage.....provided you have a good teacher...

very true indeed
i believe u can acheive ANYTHING if u have the passion for it.
i am self thaught and i'm not that gd yet but i plan to reach to a certain level of guitar playing, a very very high lvl with the help of internet.Because i think that even if u reach at a certain lvl w/o a teacher, there would probably be flaws in your playing.
So wad i planned to do is get a tcher for like 3 months? only once i think i've made it to that certain "very very high" lvl of playing..and the tcher would cover the gaps of which wad i learnt thru the net that i might have miss or didn't understand through teaching.
it'd save me loads of money which i could buy many many pedals:mrgreen:

paying for lessons is a real drag.
plus, following textbooks limit your creativity.
sometimes its better to play using whatever way you're most comfortable with, and not necessarily the "correct" way.

its best to have an advisor, like a friend who is more experienced whom you can go to if you have difficulties. but i feel it is best to pick up fundamentals yourself.

Having a teacher doesn't necessarily mean that you'll follow the textbooks page by page because that depends on the teacher himself sometimes. He can choose to be just another teaching staff who is paid by the school and guide you by the book which IMHO, an extreme real bore, or, be passionate and serious about teaching his students and really guide you towards being a good musician. For my experience, I have a teacher, and it's been 6 months or so since I've started and to be honest, I've used the textbook less than 10 times.

Passion for the instrument will help you improve, because it'll drive you to practice hard regardless of having a teacher or not. Both will have its own pros and cons, but in the end it's still up to you and what you want to achieve.

well said, i am a full time guitar teacher myself. i don follow textbooks all the da time cos its BORING!!!!! i like to do fun lessons!!!! be it beginner or intermediate levels. well i stress on alot of fundamentals n basics most of the times cos if u r really grounded, when proceeding on to higher level playing will actually be quite easy to pick up.

seriously being good is boring, its just committing to the 3Ps of playing everyday, practice practice n practice. of cos having a teacher helps in making u not have bad habits n play the right way. having a good teacher makes learning fun n u will want to play more and develop your own style too. i would say having a good teacher n actualli being a committed student yourself would be the most helpful thing ever.

well i can go on n on abt teaching n learning hahaha the most impt thing i stress in everyone is still 3Ps

PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE

i used to be self taught, but now i have a guitar teacher...i feel its better to have a guitar teacher to clean up your technique and to give you some ideas on how to play certain licks riffs etc...

plus, if you get a really good teacher, you'll feel motivated to learn and practice more than you usually do...

then again, its all personal...look at marty friedman and paul gilbert...one is self taught another went to GIT...both are still damn bloody f***ing good if you ask me....if you are able to practice well alone, more power to you...if not, then there is no harm in getting a teacher...

I want to get a teacher! But all the lessons are in the East/North/anywhere but the west. Anyone can recommend a good place to learn in the West?

like someone said, if u have the passion, it doesnt really matter.

but well, it depends on ur target of skill. if u just play for fun, u dont really care about techniques and all. u think if its nice, its nice no matter what techniques u use, a guitar teacher is not that required.

lessons for guitar can be gotten from the internet, in videos or books. u just need someone to spot mistakes, give u CONSTRUCTIVE comments. not like "its not nice. try harder...harder!!" but more like "ur picking can be improve. let me show u the way to way for easier blabla..."
