screaming with harmonics

okay, the most rad thing happened to me while i was on my axe

what just happened was that i held my pick in a manner where my thumb is very close to the blade of the pick (the picking point) and my index behind but also close to where my thumb is. placing my 3 fingers on the 15th, 16th and 17 th fret i bended it up and plucked the string. i would have expected an ordinary bend sound but the miracle was the it screeched. wow.....

but it took me several tries before i got the harmonics aka the screechy sound but it didnt sound like those heavy metal kinda harmonics. mine is like just a beginner type of screech. (ill try to get the sound online)

okay my question is, do i have to hold my pick in the manner mentioned above to do the harmonic??

you don't have to. different people do it differently haha. for me i hold urm at maybe half of the pick and when i know i have to do it soon i will move my fingers nearer to the tip, then 'pinch' the pick so that the flesh of my thumb will be very close to the tip, and then i do a pinch harmonic.

that i what i do, but i heard of people using their index finger to execute a pinch harmonic too.

your question is refering to pinch harmonic or harmonic? if you are refering to pinch harmonic, the answer is yes.

i know you want to clear your doubts. but i have to say that the question you ask can be easily found if you do a search in the forum. you just have to revive the similar thread if what you have read did not clear your doubt.

i'm sorry if i sounded harsh.

hmmm really?? i dunno man, it took me 10 or 11 trys to get the pinch harmonic thingy right. funny thing too, i was just practicing bending the string and picking it until i heard the shrill sound and im like "omg wtf was that????" lol but now i know that i have to be comfortable to do it. but the funny thing is.....even in my comfortable harmonic manner i cant get it! well, i guess that comes with practice

what?? using their index to execute a pinch harmonic??? i say, thats impressive.

maybe you could try setting your ds-1 to maximum distortion and tone, i believe that it would be easier to execute your pinch harmonics.

that's what i do with my ds-1 too

eh but you have to also bear in mind that you have to attack the strings at sweet spots. its science haha. you have to attack the string at half of the length of dunno what dunno what.

EH. the easiest way to learn pich harmonics is to go to www.ultimate-guitar.com there is this section on the left find the older entries there is a video lesson Steal this video! - Pinch harmonics. download it haha. i learnt mine from there :D

just watched it. its awesome how the guy solos and uses harmonics at the same time.

i tried, but its either i do a scale and no harmonics, or i do harmonics and screw up the rest of the solo.... :(

just found my "sweet spot" by the way. its near the first pickup of my strat. yay!

Just practice. With good practice, AND the right amount of gain, you'll get it. This is a pretty easy technique to master, so don't worry man! :D

yeah i know that, and 5 hours of it helped me found my sweet spot! :D

of course ill practice. its really fun to do it too

lol I see. well, I have a phobia for trying his songs  .

same here

i tried the palm mute for rising force by YM. man its fast.

and my d'addario string snapped because of that

eh dude you found your sweet spot yay! (sounds gay) anyway you know the way he explain that artificial harmonics is done when you artificially 'split' the string into half, quater of something like that right? i think if really desperate when playing in public or what you forgot your sweet spot just do it at exactly half of the length of string you have left after pressing on a fret. you know what i mean right?? lousy explaination sorry haha.

actually efx/amps/pickups affect pinch harmonics alot. the best pinch harmonics i got was when i used a ts9dx. it was freaking nice and easy to do wif that fx. turning up the treble to the max helps alot too. did that when u was learning hw to do it. oh n try nt to juz do the pinch harmonics at one spot. doing at different spots give different sounds. and in my opinion its mostly the way u hold ur pick that gives u that squeal.
