Judging from the 1st SBC gig we had recently - ALMOST ALL OF THE BANDS WERE DAMM GOOD AS THE VIDS TAKEN BY BLUEPRINT STUDIOS HAS PROVED ... SOME OF THE NEWBIES WERE FREAKING AWESOME

First & foremost do understand that the term PAY TO PLAY means bands having to pay organizers for the opportunity to play at the gig ... This is the first basic thing you must comprehend ...

As for the rest in response:

1. SBC soft commitee is made of local musos, vid guys / music site owners and ppl who are involved in the indusrty. This is not a hobby for us .. it's a passion.

2. Some of us musos are semi pro / pro each with at least 20-25 years cari makan expirience here in SG / Europe/ regionally

3. Some of us (me included) have day jobs & some dont

4. The pro or semi pro players in the committee PLAY FOR PAYMENT - we dont PAY ORGANIZERS TO PLAY

5. This movement of Play for pleasure (P4P) is directed to the young generation of muso who have to pay organizers to play at their event, or to audition at their event ...... as a cari makan musician - how do you feel about this? never heard of this before right? yES .. IT'S HAPPENING nowdays ..

6.The influx of foreign cheaper bands from Asean countries after the end of the disco era from the early 80s, coupled with higher cost of local acts has led to the decline of opportunies for the SG musician - why do you think I kept my day job? Nowdays, I know of some bands who would even play for beer or burgers .. I have lost paying gigs to these types of bands ... among the cut throat pro band circuit - bands even undercut each other & play for $60 -$70 a night to get the paying gig ... Something I personally dont do coz it will spoil the market.

7. We started this movement of pay for pleasure or the old term of "Say NO to pay to play" only about a month ago ... what good job you talking about that clubs all dowan hire pro bands, etc ..brother

8. AS A SEMI PRO PLAYER - I WHOLEHEARTELY SAY YES TO PLAY FOR PAY ... DONT CONFUSE THE ISSUE WITH PLAY FOR PLEASURE (P4P) which is directed at newbie musos or even veterans who desperately want to perform live BUT have to pay organizers to audition or even play in the gig...

:D

Play for pay

before i go on, ...i don't think you can redeem yourself by trying to justify your cause. let the majority decide on it.isn't that the function of a poll????.......... u are not representing the whole of singaporean musicans...u lost your job playing music to some idiot coz they r doing it for BURGERS AND BEERS and now you want to follow suit do it on a much bigger scale PLAY4FREE...wat i know is, there are some unrehearsed jam or makeshift band who will do it for free.... part of the reason they play for free is that they don't have rehearsed music or original materials and want to use performance as practice. .....didn't it occur to you that to be a musician you need to have talent..Pay2Play+Play4Pleasure = no talent......it was never cheap to import foreign band, employer need to pay for food, lodging, 2 way plane ticket, government levy & plus net pay per individual .......
being a fulltime musician is a serious matter in a wider sense because it involves education, hardwork, talent, skill, art, musicality, intelligence, charisma and honesty.
paying organizer to be able to perform is a form of coruption or bribery!...... u incorporated seasoned, veteran and pro musician here? I being among them will disagree. You will hear other wiser veterans wildly dissenting to your views.

even in a recession (if you are a real musician) you should not sell yourself short to succumb to exploitation and abuse.this is the time to regroup, reorganize,to practice honing your skills more sharply, to research on your field of expertise,to refine your existing skills, to widen your musical repertoire, to socialize with the better musicians in the field and learn vicariously, to finally look yourself in the eye and ask if you REALLY HAVE TALENT to go all the way.Life, after all, is full of choices.Maybe you are not cut out to be a real performer.
the younger musicians should follow the foot steps of good and wiser senior musicans in singapore as an example on how to deal with the problems of the times, talentwise and economics wise.

cheers

Play 4 Pleasure=good
Pay 4 pleasure= Stupid
Pay 2 perform= Organizers smiling
Play 4 pay= Bands smiling so will audience
Pay 2 Jam= Studio owner smiling

Much is misunderstood or another 'pay to play'(but probably the same jerk with another nick)organizer who just want to poke things up. There's is no explanation needed nor redemption needed for this case. A basic English can be twisted in many forms. People have their right to think what is best. But rest assured, everything is so clear but yet manipulated in a way just to provoke others. If you can't do it for free do not create trouble with others who can.

Such a sad reality......

Three folds of return to sender!

Tetragrammaton

bro Tetra - I think you are right ... now that I read the follow up post .... (and note the post count) ... with a twist on the issue to confuse matters ... so best to ignore the bugger ...

whatever the case - we all know the score and stand by our principles..right bros?

Yes bro FGL, i stand by you with the code of "holy diver",
You are helping all musicians in Singapore,
Naturally some people are not comfortable with the idea. Music performance should be free past tense, present tense and future tense.
