Santana..

Santana said "There's a difference between playing for musicians and playing for the rest" and "There's no point in speaking an elite language that most people don't understand".
What do you guys think? Do you think he's trying to cover up his "selling" out with the past three albums?
Personally I agree with him la, but there has to be someone to push the boundaries at the same time.

why must one insist on reaching the masses in the first place? The only point would be monetary gain IMO.
Is the point of music to satisfy oneself, express oneself, or is it to satisfy the whims of a fickle public?
Santana puts it quite nicely , but to me, I call it 'dumbing down.'

i think we should give this man some respect.

dumbing down or whatever it really is, he's got his own reason, and i think he's earned enough dough to be able to choose his own career path. even IF he's money hungry, so what..let him be...why is he doing that? who cares? let him do it! hahaa....

i mean..he's been rocking around since most of us haven't been around, and...i think he's really done enough to earn this respect from people.

yupz...i personally find that Santana is cool..and yeah, he may be cashing in on the new up-coming faces and bla bla bla...but he's good. definitely good. compare him technically, maybe you'll say he's not proficient, but not all shredders can play as well as him, or maybe even santana can shred, but doesn't do it because he doesn't like that type of music? haha...

for me...expressing himself..for cash, or for fame, or for whatever...it's still art (agree w/MrRhoads), and yeah... =) i like santana. so this post may be biased..but yeah...hehe...=P

=)

peace out.

santana's stuff is actually pretty nice...

i used to listen to him eg.. black magic woman .. soul sacrifice... bella etc..

when smooth came out... i listened to him a whole lot more... i must say hes one of my influences... hes kinda like a latin slash... er.. to that effect la... signature tone... signature guitar... you can tell its him just by hearing a few licks.

well ... even top musicians will appreciate a good tune if they hear one... even if its santana and britney..with rappers.. if its good its good.

doesnt have to be technical or difficult in order to be considered a good song.

a

vaiyen: if all musicians just play songs to express themselves and satisfy themselves,

then i think there'll be alot more poor musicians.
IN this world, in EVRYTHING you do, most of it concerns business, strategy.

what santana said IS indeed true,
why use an elite language to make oneself feel great when most people dont understand.

look at it this way, i think of him as a legend and he caters to almost evryone. thats what i call "open-mindedness" instead of a conservative one.

you proved my point. It's all abt making money, which Santana cleverly avoids mentioning in his comment.

perhaps he feels that his recognition in the music scene aint good enough. so he is trying to reach out to younger and less-musical people by playing stuff they prefer to hear, and adding his own touches so more people will recognise his ability to play well.

I agree with Vaiyen cos he made a very good observation.

It's all about the money! Santana is really smart in diverting attention away from that subject.

Don't forget that he has a PRS signature guitar and he collects royalties from its sales. And it was very popular quite some time ago, just after his resurgence.

However, I like his music because it's enjoyable. Go download the mp3s!

Actually many pple dun know Santana until he "sold out" , I like both aspects of his stuff, especially Black Magic Woman and Europa.
Similar to Clapton ma, when he started recording "wonderful tonight" pple also say he sell-out.
Have you all considered that maybe they got bored of what they were doing and wanted to try something else? Coz I don't think the Santana is poor in the first place to start with when he was just playing latin rock - he's pretty recognised and worshipped in his country.

Pier.

I think that there's some truth in his words. Perhaps his ideals are different from yours, in the sense that he wants to express himself to the world through his music.

To use an analogy:

In a crowd of a hundred men, he wants to use his music to reach out and touch the souls of 99 people, rather than be that one "musical genius" that nobody understands or accepts.

Ok lah, commericialized album = public will buy.
Public will buy = record sales.
Record sales = new contract.
No record sales = dropped off label.
Not popular = No label want.

Money money money...

Good point, dexian...

Was Santana here some time before his popularity skyrocketed? I think he came to S'pore before... Not sure of the year etc

I remember him postponing a concert sometime back...
He didn't really had a hit in ages before "Smooth" with Rob Thomas...
