Sanding down neck

Tried searching on soft but can't seem to open the pages. Looked around and many people seemed to recommend using 3M Scotch Brite to sand down a neck with laquer? The neck on my Epiphone Sheraton gets sticky easily, so I want to sand it down. Plus I love the feel of sanded down necks. Should the sanding motion be up and down the neck? or side to side?

i did it up n down equally in a calculated manner for my tele.

If i'm afraid to do it i'll rather pay a tech to do it.
But I did try on my Ibanez RG350DX
Didn't know how much i should sand, went by feeling.
Of course, a 'gloss' came back quickly..
