roland sonic cell sound module

Looks and sound cool for arrangers and live performers.
Any idea (From anyone) where I can i get it. Price etc etc....Swee Lee seems unaware of it.

I'm actually a little dubious about the selling point of the module. The added in an audio interface for the purpose of using it on a DAW setup. But the problem is once we are dealing with a DAW, things are drastically different:

1. People who's already using DAW would already have an audio interface that's probably better than Roland's;
2. In a DAW, softsynths and softsamplers would definitely beat the sound out of Roland;
3. Even if people want to use Roland sound, people who already have an audio interface (which most would if they are already using DAWs) would just get an XV module.

If the purpose is for live use, then I would get the XV module instead with more expansions minus the audio interface (which is not needed when connected to a keyboard).

So, I think the market is for people who are heavily into hardware and/or starting to venture into the DAW environment (so new to DAW in that they do not have an audio interface).

And if you read their small-print, they make no guarantee that their editor will work on all computer systems. They already pointed out that some systems won't work (like Cubase SX3 and MOTU). They are not even confident that their tested system will work 100%. This will mean they need a group of software engineers hanging around just to work out new patch releases and fix bugs etc - which to me, may not be a wise thing for Roland (too much time and money involved and not easy to compete with the softsynths and softsamplers which are already grounded in this area). Hardware is Roland's strenght; software is another question.

We'll see. If they come up with a version 2 of their Sonic-cell, then they would have succeeded. If not, this will be their first and last release. I wouldn't jump in to get it, esp when compatibility is still an issue. If I want Roland sound on my DAW, I would play safe and get the XV.

Very insightful indeed.

I agree that the audio interface portion might be rather "useless" for experienced DAW users and is there to attract people new to DAWs.

If we observe Roland's product line, the the sonic cell is the current version of the JV1010 and XV2020. With the same old selling points of affordability and portability.

Software problems may be due to the fact that Roland rushed the release of the Sonic cell (sure looks like it).

You're right - it follows the line of XV2020 - except one point. It adds in an audio interface which will push up the cost. Portability - definitely. It's definitely smaller than XV2020, at least in terms of width.

thanks for the info.

I am a part time arranger using softsynths in a cubase setup.

I was thinking in terms of using it as a module in a live set up as a performer (Currently I am using my reliable but aged Roland XP-60 its really no point for me buying the expensive fantom in SWEE LEE )

That is why I found it sort of cool to have the sonic cell for both choices and ..... and if it sounds good it might just add on to the softsynths i already have for music arranging..

However hearing from all your comments (Fromthe experinece pros) ...hmm... i might play wise FOR NOW and do the wait and see approach before buying it

Thanks guys!

Hi Colin, for live, you don't need an audio interface. So an XV2020 or XV 5080 would be the way to go.

Sonice cell price

I was in Swee Lee last Sunday.

If i remember correctly. It is $1380. after discount. They will always say "after discount" ....LOL...

Ishibashi webshop from Japan sells after coversion and shipping close to sing 1000.

Usa cost more.

The only thing I thing Swee Lee price is different is warranty????

Any comments

Hi I need some advice from anyone. I am thinking of buying The Roland Sonic Cell online from Japan. The only problem the online seller told me was that perhaps the unit power supply adapter is meant for Japan usage meaning input 100 volts.

I believe it is the adapter model PSB-1U with specifications: 100-240VAC (50-60Hz)

Can this be used in Singapore?

I belive the Roland Fantom uses the PSB-1U too. Or is there a Japanese PSB-1U or a Singapore version.

Can anyone help or advice..

This model is a switching adapter
PSB-1U with specifications: 100-240VAC (50-60Hz)

It can be used in singapore. you just need an "plug converter" to convert the japanese 2 prong plug to the singapore type plug. This can be bought at most supermarkets or hardwareshops.

Thanks Utano..

I bought it already....Can't wait ...Just place an order for Sonic Cell Yhrough Ishibashi. 400 cheaper than "%^&*%^&*.o.c.$%$" shop we all know in Singapore

The manual still can get it online.

As for the Sonar LE. Does anyone have an English version so I can borrow it, err maybe one to one exchange with my japanese version. or whatever terms please email me.

Or does anyone know where to download it, as i cannot find it online.
