Rock & Rojak

"there is no such thing as singaporean music" patrick chng

"the majority of singaporeans suck" leonard soosay

hahahahaha.

but no, really, i enjoyed the video. and agree totally with the fact that we don't have a singaporean sound.. and will never have one. we're rojak, we fit in anywhere we can

i just watched it too. and got linked to last 48 hours of Kurt Cobain, which i watched all 9 parts of and am now playing Bleach. lol.

the video is rather old i feel. 2006? but still i feel it's an above average documentary about local music.

well about the sound, i feel Electrico has that Singapore sound to be honest. don't really enjoy The Great Spy Experiment much because they sound very much like the bands they mentioned.

I really enjoyed video. It's a good one. IMO, Force Vomit has prove their own sound, "Eh? That sound like Force Vomit."

for Electrico it's more of david tan's singing. he sounds like a singaporean. as for the music, it's all pretty much normal british/american pop influenced, but with great hooks

and i must admit that Force Vomit does have a very unique sound

If you thought that was old, this one is even older. By their seniors in NTU (my good friends as well) back in 2003.

Call me biased but I thought 'Radio Forgot To Play My Favourite Song' was way much better. While they had accidental racial profiling, it showcased how much ethnicity our own acts could pump into their music.

Force Vomit was a bunch of Malay dudes which tapped onto their own heritage while Rudra added elements of Sanskrit chanting, sitar and tablas into their form of metal. The Chinese boys from Chou Pi Jiang did a rap-rock thing. Not that they are bad but with the exception of using the mother tongue.

'Rock & Rojak' was just discussing how fucked up we all are. Hahaha. Though I'd say that's a focus in itself.

singaporean sound? i can hardly tell the difference between american/british/european/australian etc music

but honestly, does a unique sound really matter? like david electrico said, they're just writing music that they are passionate about and not emulating their influences etc.

GLOBALIZATION, BABY! It makes us all different, and yet all the same.

For you to develop your own sound, you have to immerse yourself in your own scene and isolate yourself from the world. Japan did this, and they certainly have their own style!

But you will find Jrock or Jpop music from Europe and US, and similarly you will find Seattle-Grunge, California-Thrash and Norwegian-Folk-Metal in Japan.

It makes us all different and all the same.

BTW:

BAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA when Sean Cheng says BACKSTREET BOYS with a straight face xD

"we purposely sell out because we got no integrity whatsoever"

i miss ronin like hell :(
