Rock Band (the game)

I'm very curious what real musicians think about Rock Band (the PS3 / Xbox 360 game).

Do you find it insulting to music and musicians? Do you find it amusing? Fun? Easy? Hard?

Who here has played it?

For me, I like the game. Um... it was the game that inspired me to pick up drumming.

just like guitar heroes and similar games, i would think theyr NOT an insult, sometimes we have to let people who cant play guitar to feel like a rockstar sometime u kno what i mean... tahts what i always say to my friends who cant play guitar but keep talking about guitar hero when im around and ask me how i feel about this kinda stuff.

anyways, i dont intend to try it at all, looks to me that improvising your own stuff will definitely lose you alot of points.

Haha, yeah of course you can't get creative and improvise in these games. The games mainly test hand-eye coordination and, to a certain extent, limb/finger flexibility. Uh... and sense of rhythm and timing.

Well, even while I enjoy playing it, sometimes I feel amused at myself playing it, pretending to be a real musician. Haha.

That's why I am taking drumming lessons now.

But I still find the game fun in different ways than playing the real instruments.

If you get sick and tired of going no where on a real instrument, take a break and play Rock Band, lol. I'd prefer the drum simulator compared to the guitar because it's closer to the real thing than spamming 3-4 buttons constantly, even if remotely.

Don't know why no one mentions the rhythm games before rockband or guitar hero, especially the ones in arcade. IMO, those feel harder to play...

Ikiru: Yeah, the drums seem to be closest to the real thing. Maybe that's why I like it the most!

Guitar Hero World Tour will be even better (that game's coming out end of the year). The drum kit for that will have 2 cymbals in addition to the 4 toms/snare drums and 1 foot pedal for bass.

It doesnt make sense to say learn the real thing instead of playing the game cos they are totally different. Even if there were no GH3, i wud still be playing my xbox to kill time or chill out for a while. Its just a game anyway.

Do you mean the cost for GH World Tour? I don't know, the costs haven't been revealed yet.

Yeah, they're totally different things. Well, but I have heard some real musicians online diss Guitar Hero and Rock Band for being frivilous and wannabe. So, I just thought to ask the question here and find out what you guys here think!

for guitars, hard to make the controller feel real..

but games like drummania = essentially the real deal.

So I wonder if most drummers will enjoy drumming arcade games.

I think by 2020, guitar hero games would be advanced enough to plug in a real guitar and play. Supercomputers would be able to decipher the pitches of the note from the guitar and the score can be counted. Thats when real guitarists would own at the game compared to those who have never touched a real guitar.

haha.. We will have to wait and see.

But then again, by 2020 i think everyone would be bored of this kind of genre of games
