- that we dont have talent here that we can import
- that local bands are too much on the technical side and yet no song that are good and marketable
- that rivermaya is not good technically but they have music that can reach across asia which we dont have
- that electrico is good as a band, but hey its the song that counts!!!! technico but yet not magnifico
- that kurt cobain kick ass all those spray net hair guitarist that can do the tapping and scale as fast as scratching their hair with lice

^ agree with this. im no local but first time i came here i immediately got the impression that local artists tend to be too technical, and tend to become critical technically to other artists as well.

if you want mainstream success, you need good songs. good melodies and lyrics. not the fastest screaming notes on your ibanezes.

i understand also that a lot of musicians here are professionally taught. compared to bands from indonesia, thailand and philippines who mostly are self-taught and promote themselves independently. so maybe it has something to do with that

but there are a lot of good bands here. maybe its the local support that is lacking

and come to think of it those bands that we say are not good(including rivermaya), that can make it around asia, they dont need expensive gear, they just need acoustic guitar to compose a music and voila a sure hit. here they are focusing their musicality with their expensive gear and the end of the day no original music just the same scale they learn from the retired 80 to 90's rock shreder and telling to other so called musician that they have these expensive guitar and tube amp with true bypass effects and bla bla bla bla bla. again lets live with IT

unfortunately, bands like rivermaya will never even react to his statements. they're already up there and where is he (Rork)? how does he match up? but seriously, we don't need any match-ups. and hey, they never said they are good. bland music, very ordinary, waste of time, crap--these are also good and powerful. but when these powers ends up with the wrong hands, that's when it becomes 'no good.'

well rivermaya, esp. rico blanco is used to this shite. he gets compared everyday to bamboo and eat "your band sucks, bamboo is better" for breakfast hehehe

yet they are moving their way up internationally, i'd say better than bamboo. again technically, bamboo is better, but at the end of the day, its those songs that sell, and rivermaya have 5-6 albums and a lot of hits to back it up

to be able to sell songs around a diverse region culturally and socially as south east asia, that's a pretty good feat dont you think

plus singapore needs international acts. its actually good for the local scene. you need a big act to headline a gig, so poeple would come. then local acts get some attention. coz think about it, can local bands like electrico have a big event every month in singapore and expect the same support from locals everytime? probably not, we'd get sick of them fast

first of all RORK such strong and insulting words and just irritating ...you dont like rivermaya thats fine but do go to the extent that using such words !!! (

I don't know why we cater to such crap here when we have at least ten beands that cn play better. - I will need to qualify this thought.
( at least ten give me one !!!)

But rivermaya/ Give me a break!!!!!!!!!! If that's good then we don't need better! But they are more than piece of crap band! They need more better songs and better band members! Crap to think that we can promote such nonsense here.

Music is art dude, art is subjective.

You can't expect other thousand music lovers with their own ears to like what you like and dislike what you dislike.

Please don't sell yourself like this in the forum giving harsh comments to other artists - foriegn or local (it just doesn't feel right you know).

You might not like the guitarists style, but other people might like it, or maybe the lyrics, or melody or chord progressions perhaps?

well I actually like the old rivermaya with Perf on guitars and Bamboo on vox.
But to compare Rivermaya with other bands here is just non sense.

Yeah I know some good local bands here but as what some users here said... they are more onto the technical stuffs and gears rather than the music itself.

It's simple if you dont like them.. dont buy their albums or even listen to their songs.. but I wonder why did you go to their concert? I assume you have listen to their songs on the radio right? if from the radio you did not like what you hear, then why bother waste money and time to go to their concert? then u are telling us they are crap? :roll:
