Rig advice/questions/noob intro

Hi guys, been a while since I played an electric. Recently GASed for one after playing with a friend's. Been playing acoustic sporadically since I traded my last CE24 for a motorcycle 5 years back.

Pulled the trigger on a LP Standard too quickly, when the first-choice 335 I saw was out of my price range. But managed to score one recently at a more sane price (new was S$3.5k list when I had mine!). I can't afford to keep 2 guitars like that, heart tells me to sell the LP and keep the 335. Please tell me you agree!

Did have a LP and 335 (at different times) 5/6 years back, honestly don't remember both of them to make an educated decision now, apart from that I like cherry better than iced tea. But seriously noobness tells me I should keep a tonally versatile guitar, at least until I get better at playing. Am out of touch with guitar technology, so came in to get some input from the gurus here.

Amp-wise, I've trawled some of the threads here for small, 15W/sub-15W full tube head+cab/combos and list the following:

Epiphone Valve Junior
Ibanez Valbee
Fender Blues Junior
Fender Pro Junior
Reverend Goblin
Orange Tiny Terror
THD Univalve
Mesa Express 5:25 (technically not small, but you get the point)

1. Where do you get THD and Orange stuff locally? If not, what's the best avenue to buy them from?
2. If I intend to get one with kickass clean tone, and choose to colour tone with digital effects (Line6 etc), is it better to go with an effects loop (bypass preamp, something like that)?
3. How good are digital boxes at replicating the sounds they claim they do? And is it any different when driven through a tube amp?

Thanks in advance!

Remember that good tone comes from fingers too~

Some digital stuff like Digitech Delay, Line 6 are great for their recreations and the cute and experimental sounds they can bring. And they do sound good.

Tube amps of the more boutique range are harder to come by here. So just look around someone may let go a Mesa or Fender, Vox or maybe the new Peaveys, or some surprises now and then.

Dr.Z, Matchless, Fuchs anyone?

i'm having a great time with my ValBee, it isn't boutique by any chance but it enjoys being driven by a mild type drive unit (using Rocktron's Austin Gold in the mean time).

If you are seriously considering THD etc
then you should add microbaby to the list

I have not heard it in person
but reading the site makes me GAS

and if you bring it in,
there would be one piece here in Singapore
then maybe one day get to try : )

Why don't you also consider the AC15CC for a tube amp.
saw one and city music tried it out and i liked it over the pro junior. But I have no idea how it compares to the rest nor its price.

And prolly best looking 15W tube amp.

U Should go for the goblin. It comes with 3 voicing; UK (vox/marshall). US (Fenderish) and lo-fi.

3-Position Schizo™ Switch offers the following voicings:
- US - Transparent midrange with strong bass and treble for classic American clean and light overdrive.
- LO-FI - Softer treble and stronger midrange, for a bluesy grind reminiscent of vintage off-brand American amps.
- UK - Even more gain with a distinctly British upper-mid peak for classic blues-rock and hard-rock crunch.

I have the kingsnake by the way.

Tried the Gries. Puts the Reverend Goblin to shame. Though, the Gries @ Malcolm's home IS a 35 watter with a 12" speaker. Talk about unfair comparisons!

Anyway, that Gries has more low end than I'll ever need. Furniture rattling, floor shaking bass... and what, the Bass control was only @ 12 oclock. It also has a ton of headroom, not easy to overdrive it, very nice to run your pedals thru it... needless to say, tone wise, it is ... well, go to Malcolm's and try it out. Be a believer.

Okay, now, about the price for the gries.... 8O

The Gries is based on the old blackface Fender design.. I've never played a Gries but from the Gries website, the parts used are all top-notch.. this includes the mercury magnetics transformers, pine cabs, mallory caps, etc.

I'm sure the amp sounds alot like the old blackface fenders..

:D

What do you guys think about Atomic Amps? It's a tube power amp + cab combo that works specifically for digital effects boxes like the Pod etc.
