Ya Edder nailed it... basically... shifting the neck towards the bridge gets you a tighter tone but you loose that hollow/tubular tone thats found on 21/22 fret guitars.
Tighter is usually better for metal because there is a lot of shred going on and metal is all about being tight no? Tight pants, tight bass lines, tight drums, tight rhythm, tight this, tight that.
Its 22 frets for me... either that or 27. Have you heard Mattias Eklundh's "neck" tone on his 27 fret caparison? It blows me away, sheer tone in that.
