Restringing issues

Hey guys, I am able to restring my guitar but most of the times when tuning to pitch, one of the bottom three strings will have a snap sound. The string remains on the guitar but is very loose. I don't understand what I am doing wrong cause I have no problems doing the same way of restringing with the top thickest 3 strings.

Recently I was tuning the last string (high e) and when it reaches the D sharp, about to tune to E, there was a snap sound, and the string becomes loose!

Advise me softies! Thanks!

You probably didn't check that the string was completely strung thru the bridge of the guitar. Sometimes the ball end of the string gets caught in the bridge and gets stuck there until enough pressure makes it come loose.

what guitar is this? Did you check that when you are winding the string around the machine head that it is wrapping tightly around the machine head? Did you give the string enough slack? If it still happens i suggest you head down to one of the shops to do it for you, eg Sound Alchemy

Hmm..I checked that the string was completely through the string..

I guess it was the slack. I only watched videos on how to restring, don't have anyone to teach me in person. So honestly I didnt leave any slack, I just wrap the string around the tuning head once, insert the string and start tuning. That's where the snap sound begins.

So.. Once the snap sound happen, do I have to change a new string or can this string be used again?

I didn't mean the machine head cos its hard to screw up putting the string thru it. More often than not its the bridge, esp if its a string thru bridge guitar. When the string is stuck it'll seem like its all the way thru the bridge so you've gotta double check by shaking the string and pulling it abit harder thru the bridge.

Like J-custom said, it would help a lot of we knew what type of guitar this is.

sometimes it's because your string isn't secure at the tuner, sometimes due to the bridge issue mentioned. make sure your string is "tied" under itself once you thread it through the tuner post.

some googling will elaborate on what i mean.

I see. I'm assuming its a string thru bridge so if the string suddenly makes a snap sound and becomes very slack then its the bridge side thats not secure. If it just becomes abit less slack then its probably the tuners, string trees or nut.

Hmm.. I'm still not too sure.. Once its about to tune to pitch there is snap sound then it becomes loose. I just tried to turn it further. Now not loose anymore, but I dont want to keep tuning it lest I really snap the string this time =/ So should I keep tuning it to pitch after the snap sound? Anyway thanks for your help!

No problem.. So does it become a lot looser or abit only? Is the snap sound more of a ping than a snap? Tuning it should be fine but its better to rectify the problem rather than keep tuning.

Next time after you string it up just shake the strings wherever they are in contact with the guitar (tuners, nut, string trees and bridge) to make sure they are aren't stuck. You will usually hear a ping sound but thats just the strings getting unstuck.

I can't be 100% sure on what the problem is cos I can't see your tele but if you bring it to a guitar tech they will be able to diagnose the problem. Just be sure to ask them whats wrong so you can learn from it and not waste money in the future just to restring.

Ah.. actually it happens again. Another snap sound and it becomes totally loose again.. Which guitar tech should I bring to? Any recommendations? Do I get free restringing and strectching if I buy strings from the store?

your guitar's string ferules might be a little deformed, this way, the ball end of your strings can never go through them until there's more tension when you tune- then it'll be tugged into place & that's when you hear that annoying sound & the string will start to go slack again.

Yeah agree with sub. Its that or the inside of the bridge wasn't cut properly which makes the string stuck.

Most if not all of the shops at penin do setups, just go down and explain your problem they will try to fix it. Maybe they'll file it down or change the ferrules.

But I had this problem once in the past with the G string. Same problem as my high E string. I just took a new G string and do it again and it works. But it happen now to the E string.. think I will go down the shops and set up one day! Thanks a lot!
