Remo

Recently i've bought a Remo Coated Ambassadors from the swee lee sale. Somehow, the look, texture/feel and quality seems different, not for the better though. From the 1st day of playing, the coat already comes off. I've got another Remo Coated Ambassadors from 3 years back which was used extensively, yet the coat's still in perfect condition besides the usual marks of dirty stick heads of course. It just doesn't feel right and feel the same. Also i don't think the head was made perfect in it's shape, tends to be a problem when trying to fit/align the head perfectly onto the bearing edge. Just what i feel :)

ive have the same problem. bought an Ambassador head from the Sweelee sale as well. The head looks like its been kept for a really long time in the store.. Yellowish and all. After just a few strokes, the coating has come off.

1st time for me using Remo heads..Wonder if its the problem of where these heads are stored at or a manufacturing QC fault..

does the coating feel sticky?
if it is, it is likely to be an old stock or one that has been subjected to heat in some ways
I've learnt my lesson on this, to inspect each head before purchasing

btw, in general, comparing with evans, remo has a slightly thinner coating
some ppl love it, some hate it
for me, I can't tell the difference - both brands make good heads :)

spikehead9: Saw you at the sale, was checking out sticks when you were at the sticks/cymbals corner. Wanted to ask you to join my bunch in the queue, but didn't see where you disappeared to.

Seems like this is always the case for coated heads on sale. Happened at the Yamaha sale with Evans heads and now with Remo Heads at the Swee Lee sale.

I guess the flaking is due to the humidity levels at where the skins are kept in.

My Evans Genera HD snare batter was sticky. Could practically scrape it off with my nails. Stupid.

I am still using Pro TONe.original Pearl stock heads.on my drums...do not some too good but decent enough for practise..

can I ask? how much difference if to change to say REmo pinstripe?

Hey Jeepers, no worries :) Still got what i wanted anyway. What's your name by the way? Hmm yea i thought so, the skin was pretty yellow, thinking that it was a design change to differentiate it from the emperor which was white colored during the sale. So far all the remo heads i've bought have never been sticky, only evans heads. Evans do have a heavier coating too i feel, but that doesn't make remo any lousier, always comes down to preference. Just doesn't feel good buying a head of such poor qualities. haha.
As quoted from their website, Remo says pinstripes are ideal for "fat" sounds, due to their double 7mil mylar with a layer of ring reducing agent which kills off some of the highs and gives the head it's low/warm pitch.
Once again, it's down to preference ;)

I bought pinstripes during the sale, good condition I must say. The way I tuned my kit, my skins are loose so I've got a nice solid, focused hit, metal type sounds

spikehead9: Jasper here, lol. Quite sure you don't know me.

lester_music: Difference in price, or sounds? Pinstripes will cost quite a bit if you change out all your skins to them. For sounds, I'm not too sure 'cos I changed out my Protones the moment I got my kit.

I'm using Evans EC2s now and I find them just perfect. Would prefer them coated but Ranking doesn't bring in EC2 Coateds. Pity. Like spikehead9 said, it's all down to personal preference.

I bought snare Evans reverse control dot during the yamaha sale mths ago... and the coated is so sticky and it came off....gt stuck to my drumstick tip...and it looks like it is forming a new layer at the tip of my drumstick...furthermore, everytime i hit my toms, the heads on the toms have white strokes on it....so my toms heads are all white....very ugly lei....y ah???....

personally, i've found this matter doesn't only apply to humid singapore but also in europe.

i've read somewhere in the remo forums that they do experience this problem too with a emperor x coated snare batter. the dude used it for like 10 minutes and the coating simply came off like nobody's business.

he launched a complain at the remo forums and many have cited reasons like remo factories selling copies from taiwan with the "made in usa" banner thing. *the made in taiwans remo are generally lower in quality and are made for stock heads for mapex, remo. pearl snares/kits when u buy them* not saying that remo makes bad heads in taiwan, but that was the hunch people got of the situation for the dude who complain in europe.

but fortunately for the guy, it was an original remo made in usa ones and it simply was handling issues with the head that made it in that manner. he got a replacement head as soon as remo found it out....

generally u should check the heads first before buying... this issue has been quite a prominent throughout the world. :P

my $.02

haha yeaup i always check. usually during non-sale period the plastic bags of heads are usually open, most of them at the sale were closed :S After one jam, there's a slight dent in the head. ugh. i've never dented heads before. Perhaps it's just really from taiwan and might be of lower quality, and of different color. Then again, i guess no one can be 100% sure. Just that such an established company should be of a certain standard and have good quality control :) just my thoughts

Apparently Swee Lee carries a mix of both MIA and MIT skins, not too sure about it though. It's a pity eh, since Remo skins are kind of pricey on normal walk-in days and when they're cheap during the sale, they're messed up.

just note the logos i guess.. i bought a pearl omar hakim last time. was fitted with remo ambassador snare and snare side but the made in usa sign was missing...

so i guess those without the MIA ones MIT i guess... check and double check again. :D
