Reignited A Lost Passion

Gilmour

New member
Heya All. I'm new to the thread. Ive reignited my interest in guitar after almost 14years of giving up the hobby.

Currently taking private beginner lessons with an instructor. I'm using an old Samick (made in korea) guitar and a Trace Elliott 15w amp.

Sent the guitar for servicing after keeping it in the attic for almost 12yrs and it still works fine except for some minor wear/tear on the fretboard and body.

I intend to purchase a new guitar when i have sufficiently picked up the basics. However, i am in need of a practise amp as the old amp seems to have not lasted the 14yrs!

My interests are with the likes of David Gilmour/Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler generally blues style. Not into metal or the likes of Green Day or Metallica. To each his own but i find 60s-70s music very soothing.

Can anyone recommend me an amp with a budget of about $200. Ive heard of the Marshall CDR15 but would like to seek comments from similar enthusiasts. I like the clean sound of guitars with the option of having light distortion.

Also, the Fender strats are really nice to have but abit out of my budget for a newbie. Any recommendations of guitars costing 1/2 of those?

Thanks

Daneal

I think the Marshall MG15CDR would be a great practice amp for its price. You can have the option of crunchy clean tone or light bluesy overdrive to hard rock distortion with just a click of the switch button.

Also, if you do not mind the brands, you can go for a Squier Stratocaster or even a Telecaster :)

amp

hmm..a few posts in the buy/sell for the marshall going for between 80-90. might consider this option. my guess is the vox and rolands cost about 200 brand new?

hmmm...options options:confused:

first of all, congratulations on re-picking guitar, which makes you (again) a better person then most people in the world, heheh.

and as for the amp, you can try roland cube 15 or roland cube 30, versatile amps :]

i don't hav recommendations. But i just want to welcome you to the forum and congratulate you on reviving your interest in guitars.

great to be back!

thanks boyl and jonEthan!

i only wish i had carried on 14yrs ago instead of now having to do it all over again from the beginning!

a vox pathfinder 15r would sound great clean and have an onboard overdrive(unable a chugg, works fine with low gain settings). around 100-120 2nd hand. 1st hand at city music.

hmm, ur influences(from my understanding) widely uses strats, so...u may wanna get urself a strat too. fender strats have a rather wide range of prices, mostly depending on where its made in. so..u still can consider fender, if not, there's squire and many other brands which have their own copy.

*reads*

u have an attic??

Hey Van, Thanks for the offer. Will definitely keep this in mind. However, my immediate priority is to get an amp and then move up from there. Need to not make mistakes in purchasing equipment based on impulse and thereafter realising that its not what i wanted or needed (just like my photography hobby! LOL)

But you are right..i should be looking at strats. Almost all my "heroes" use em

Yo! Thanks for the recommendation on the VOX pathfinder. Ive been looking at some of the other recommendations such as the VOX ad15vt?..Its pretty confusing to see which is the "best" amongst its price/class so i guess i will just have to not rely too much on the online reviews and actually go test it out myself.

I kinda like the Fenders. My teacher uses an American made strat and it does sound and feel good at a price of >$2K..oh well...

Maybe ill consider the MIJ ones when the times right or if i get a good bonus this year!

And yes i have an attic LOL. I live in an apartment which occupies the topmost floor :-) but i prefer strumming in my room.

american strat

hey, u sound exactly like me....rekindled my interest after 15 years as well. if you want to get a strat, go for the american standard, swee lee selling for 1.5k only...or the delux for 1.8k. beautiful! they have great resale value in case your interest is short lived.

Hey..welcome back to the "reignited passion" club LOL. Lots of ad postings by instructors in the forum. I'm taking up lessons at "The Music Lab" in Bugis. Its pretty affordable. Group classes are $80 and a group can comprise 2 ppl. Individual lessons would cost more. Do a local search on yahoo for their website.

Thanks for the amp recommendation. I've more or less set my sights on the AD15VT. It has pre-amp settings and its tube! I used to be an audiophile as well so i do enjoy the warmth of tubes. Not sure how it is with guitar amps though. I think citymusic has a sale going on. $200 for the AD15VT and the 30 going for $260.

As for jam sessions, check out Pink Floyds live at the Pompeii on youtube. The jam sequence at the 7th minute of Echoes part I rocks!

Eh. City music having a sale on the XL series Valvetronix amps, the black grilled ones which is geared towards high gain. I think you're looking for the AD15VT which is the silver grilled one.

so have you started lessons??

i think gilmour looks better younger. ive always noticed he doesnt take too much in dressing up for his concerts...seems he always plays in the same black tshirt!!! i think there was a comment that he doesnt really care how he looks like so long as he still churns out the amazing sounds on his fender strat.

speaking of which, his signature black fender sells for more than 6k i think..damn...it originated from 27 years ago and he has constantly improved on it. wonder what ill be doing in 27 years.

no sure yet, like i say im no good with lessons hehe
hard habit to break since ol schooldays always skip lessons

hows 'reigniting route" on your side going on? can do gilmour already? new vox?
in 27 yrs? maybe we'll be cracking our head on how to get back our hard earned $ in cpf

:p
